HARTFORD, coNNEcTicUT.
Letters .Patent No. 89,459, dated April 27, 1869.
IMPROVE!) BLACKING-BRUSH.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making partvof the name.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES L. W. BAKER, of the city and county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Shoe-Brushes; and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe, referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts.
The nature of this invention consists in providing the tufts of bristles (which compose thatv part of a` shoe-brush used for applying the blacking) with a supporter; the object-of which is to prevent the bristles from matting, and thereby becoming useless for applying blacking. p
This supporter is composed of wood, or other suitable material, and provided with orifices, in or through which the bristles pass, and corresponding in position and number with those in the brush-wood, in which the bristles, or other material, are secured in the common Way.
In the accompanying drawingsa a/ are the brush-woods.
b isa handle to the brush, secured to the wood a' by screws.
c are tufts of bristles, or other availablematerial, secured in the woods a a'.
Then the woods` are secured, together in the usual way.
d are supporters, one or more in number, having orifices for the reception of the tufts of bristles corresponding 4in position and number of orifices with those formed in the brush-wood a', in which the bristles, or other material, are secured in the common way.
The tufts of bristles are inserted through the supusual way.
'lhus it will be seen that when the bristles are worn down near to the supporter, so as to be inconvenient to use for applying the blacking,.tbe supporter can be easily and quickly removed, and the brush will again be in a good condition for applying the blacking, and nearly or quite as good as when new.
I believe I' have thus shown the nature, construction, ,and advantage of this invention, so as to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same therefrom.
iVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
One or more supporters, (l, with a blacking-brush, a', substantially as and for the purpose described.
