Description

@uiten gisten getest @ffice NATT'TAN E. .BADGLEY oF NNW YORK, N. Y. Lettere Patent No. 73,769, dated January 28, 1868.
.MPROVED BROOM.
To ALL WHoM IT MAY coNcEnN:
Be it known that I, NATHAN E. BADGLEY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Device for Constructing Brooms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of thel construction andoperation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a, part of this specification, in which Figure v1 is an exterior view of the 'head or oep.
`Figure 2 represents the device for fastening the brush to the handle.
Figure 3 shows the manner of fastening the brush to the handle; and
Figure 4 represents the broom complete.'
The nature of my invention consists in the manner et' preparing the corn-brush'and fastening it to the.
square end ofthe' handle, `andthe manner of constructing and applying the broom-head or cap.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use Illy-invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. l
The corn-brush stalks A. are prepared and held snugly up against the square end of the handle B by means 0f the `Wire or cord C, as shown in 5g. 3. The wire or cord C passes through the lower end of the handle B, at a suicient distance to make e permanent fastening between the brush and handle, as shown in fig. 2. The head or. cap D, and its neck E, may be constructed of' anysuitable material, as shown in iig. l, to be applied or set over the upper part-of the brush, and held `in its place by means ot' a screw or nail passing through the neck of cap into the handle, for the .purpose of giving greater strength and steadiness to the broom,
as shown in iig. 4.
It will beseen from theconstruction of this broom that when the brush becomes too much worn for further use, the broom may be taken apart and a new brush applied, and so on, as long as the handle end 'cap may last, thus resulting in the construction and use of a very neat, cheap, and durable broom. y v
What claim as my invention, and'desire'to secure by Letters Patent, isv
The combination ofthe scalloped-edged cap D, its neck E, the tying of broom-corn in one plnce, and securing the same with cord C to the square-end of handle' B, all as and for the purpose herein described.
