C.. YV. BREVVER'-, OF RACIN E, WISCONSIN.
Letters .Patent No. 89,381, dated Apr-il 27, i869.
IMFROVEMENT IN PIANO-BRIDGES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent; and making part of the same.
To all whom @t may concern:
Be it known that I, G. W. BREWER, of Racine, in' the county of Racine, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful `Improvement in Piano- Forte Bridges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of my improved bridge.
Figure 2 is a detail plan' or top. view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of this invention is to so construct the bridge of a piano-forte that the sound will be perfectly clear, and that no jingling tones will be produced.
The invention consists in lining the bridges or stringbearin gs of a piano-forte with vulcanized India rubber, so that the strings will rest on this elastic substance.
As rubber is no sound-conductor, it will, during the vibrations of the string, not injure nor weaken the sound produced by the same, and will therefore be superior as a lining to the wood, ivory, er metal heretofore used for that purpose.
A, in the drawing, represents the body ofl a stringsupport or bridge of a piano-forte. It is made of wood, metal, or other suit-able material, in ordinary or suitable manner. Its surface is lined with a strip, B, of India rubber, by' which the strings C are supported.
The rubber is provided with a convexA lower face, as shown, or is fitted into a grooved surface of the bridge, or 'is otherwise secured to the latter.
Having thus described my invention,
l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The rubber lining on the bridge or string-support of a piano-forte, arranged substantially as descr'rbed.
