Description

lchent @with JACOB LENHARD, or NEW YoRK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 91,029, dated June 8, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT VIOLINS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o! lthe same.
To all-whom it 'may conce/rn:
Be it known that I, J AcoB LENHABD, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and-useful Improvement in Bow-Instrument; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable'others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a vert-ical transverse section of a bow-instrument provided with iny improvements.
Figure' 2 is u side view, partly in section, of the same.
Similar' letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. Y
This invention relates to an improved manner of securing .the bridge to a violin or other bow-instrument, with an object of securing greater freedom to the sounding-board, to allow the same t'o vibrate with less difficulty than heretofore. f Y
The 'bridge is supported at one end by the soundpost B, which is brought directly under the end of the bridge, while the other end of the bridge stands on the The loweren'd of the post is lirrnly secured to the bottom, E, in thev ordinary or suitable manner.
That end of the bridge which is supported by the post B is so far elevated above the board C that the latter will, during its vibrations, not be likely to come in contact with said end, nor witlra shoulder, a, on the post. i
By means of the bar D, the bridge is prevented from coming in contact with the sounding-board C when the strings are strained, because said bar holds the post B, which supports the bridgerigidly in position within the opening of the sounding-board.
I am: aware of the patent granted' to A(Fn-EL Hulskamp, October 2 1, 1862, in which onepost of the bridge is made to bear upon theupper and'one upon y the lower sounding-board, either' directly or by'means of a. tripod or post; but this I do not claim. Having thus described mynyention- What -I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The cross-bar D, arranged within` the box of a Y bow-instrument, to serve as a guide for the sound-post,
which partly supports the bridge, substantially as here in shown and described.`
2. The bridge A and post B, in combination with the cross-bar D, substantially as described, for the purpose specied. r The above speciiication of my invention signed by me, this 24th day of March, 1869.
JACOB LENHARD. Witnesses:
