Description

v G. FOGELBERG. Melody Attachment for Organs. N0.101,605.-
Patented April 5, 1870.
{patent Gtjiiiinr.
CARL FOGELBERG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 101,605, dated April 5, 1870.
MELODY ATTACHMENT FOR ORG-ANS, 81c.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part. of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL Foonnnnnc, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Melody Attachment for Key-Board Instruments; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, which represents a melody attachment, having my present improvements combined with it.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention is an improvement on that previously patented by me, January 26,1869, and which is numbered 86,219; and
' It has for its object to furnish simple means whereby the tuning of the pipes of a melody attachment to correspond with the pitch-of the key-board instrument to which it-is attached is readily effected; and
It consists in combining with the said attachment an adjustably-weighted bellows and an air-drum, provided with an adjustable valve.
A is an ordinary bellows for supplying wind to the pipes.
B is an adjustable weight, movable by means of the lever O and rod 0' between the guides D on top of the bellows A. By this movement decreasing or increasing the leverage of the weight B, and thereby, also, the pressure of the wind in the bellows and pipes, the tone of said pipes may be raised or lowered at the will of the player to agree to the pitch of the key-board instrument.
E, leading from the bellows A to the organ-pipes, an
air-dru m, F, provided with a valve, G, which, by means of the rod H, can be opened or closed to any degree,
to moderate the greater or lesser density of the wind in the drum F, and changing the pitch of the organ-.
pipes accordingly.
It is evident that, for a limited range of difference in pitch, either of the said devices is alone sufiicient; but in such instruments as, for instance, melodeons, where the sound is produced by reeds which, from variation in temperature, give a higher pitch when the organ-pipes give a lower one, and vice verse, the range of difference may sometimes be so great as to necessitate the application (which I prefer) of the two devices at the same time, as shown in fig. 1 on the drawmg.
This device or combination of devices is equally applicable in all cases where organ-pipes are used, either exclusively or together with reeds, 0r strings, or other musical devices.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The bellows A, when provided with the adjustable weight B and the air-drum F, when provided with the adjustable valve G, either combined or separate, for the purpose of raising or lowering the pitch of the sound in organ-pipes, substantially as described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 6th day of August, 1869.
CARL FOGELBERG.
