SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 248,317, dated. October 18, 1881.
Application filed April 8, [881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HIRAM A. HOVENDEN, of Trivoli, in the countyof Peoria-,in the State of Illinois, have invented a Flute Attachment for Reed-Organs; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification,in which like letters of reference refer to like parts, and in whioh Figure 1 represents a side View of flute attachment; Fig. 2, a cross-section at 00.
D represents the upper board of the bellows ot' the organ, which is constructed to force the air out through the aperture F against the reed E,instead of, as is customary, to draw the air in through said opening and thereby cause the reed E to vibrate. It is, of course, also necessary to reverse the reed E to adapt itt'or the new direction from which the air is coming.
Through the top of the reed-board B, I make the opening H, exactly over the aperture F, and into said opening H insert and secure the connecting-pipe G. This connectingpipe G is hollow, and terminates, at its upper extremity, in an elongated slit, as shown in Fig. 2. Extending sidewise from this connecting-pipe G are one or more arms, K, to which the flute A is secured.

The flute A. is closed and tuned at its end by the plug (3, and it must be tuned to the key of the reed E beneath it, for I have as many flute attachments A G as there are reeds in the reed board, extending from the lower alto notes up to the higher soprano. By the pressureof the linger upon the key of the key-board, air is allowed to rush through the aperture F by the reed E, setting the samein vibration, up through the opening H and connecting-pipe G, until, by impinging against the edge of the opening O of the flute A, that,a-lso,is made to give forth a musical note with the reed E beneath it.
What [claim as my in vention, and for which I desire Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:
The horizontal flute-pipe A, with connectingpipe G and arms K, arranged as deseribed,iu combination with the reed-board B of a reedorgan, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
