HEINRICH FRIEDRICH AUGUST WIGHMANN, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY.
ACCORDION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,696, dated August 23, 1887. Application filed May 12, 1886. Serial Nov 201,945. (No model.) Patented in Germany August 5, 1886, No. 36,382.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRICH FRIEDRICH AUGUST WIOHMANN, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Hamburg, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Accordions, (for which I have received Letters Patent in Germany, No. 36,382, dated August 5, 1886,) of which the following isva specification.
My invention relates to improvements in accordions; and the object of the same is to increase the sound of the vibrating reeds and to produce strong, clear, and trumpet-like tones. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of an accordion provided with my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a crosssection thereof.
Similar letters refer to similar parts through out the several views.
Each plate a, provided with two free reeds, covers toward the bellows a cell, which is formed by the partitions?) I) c c, and in which is inserted at the upper side of the accordion, toward the key-board, a tube, (1, of any suitable cross-section and of cylindrical or conical shape, or of another regular or irregular form. The outside openings of such tubes (1 are covered by flaps e, which are attached by the arms f to the keys g.
By playing the instrument that reed begins to sound from the tube of which the flap e is raised by depressing the corresponding key 9, thus allowing the current of air produced by the movement of the bellows to pass through the reeds. As the tone is reflected or reverberated several times by the elasticity of the tube-walls, it is strengthened and sounds as if produced by means of a trumpet. Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is In an accordion, the combination of the cell covered by the free reed-plate a with the tube d and flap e, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 24th day of April, 1886.
HEINRICH FRIEDRICH AUGUST WICHMANN.
