GUITAR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANGELO DEGULIO, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Guitar, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates generally to stringed musical instruments and more particularly it involves an improved construction of body of a guitar.
The object of my invention is to provide a stringed instrument with an improved form of sounding board whereby the volume of sound emitted by such instrument is increased and the tone thereof is much improved.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a guitar embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a sectional view thereof on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
My improved guitar is provided with a sounding board 1 positioned within the body 2, this sounding board being suitably maintained in position by longitudlnally and transversely extending supporting members 3, 1. The top side of the body 2 is provided with the usual opening 5 over which the strings 6, pass, each of the strings being se cured to the pegs 7 carried by the body. The sounding board 1 is provided with an opening 8 which registers with the opening 5 in the body, as shown particularly in Fig. 1. The body 2 is further provided with an opening 9 adjacent the pegs 7 this opening being adapted to permit the bridge 10 to pass therethrough, the bridge being supported on the sounding board 1; the strings 6 are suitably positioned 011 the top of the bridge 10 in the well-known manner.

Referring particularly to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the bridge is supported entirely by the sounding board 1, being out of contact with the top of the body 2, this construction affording an increase in volume and an improvement in the tone of the sounds emitted by the instrument, since thefree vibration of the sounding board is not interfered with in any Way by the hands when playing; the vibration of the strings is transmitted directly to the sounding board and none of the energy of the vibration is dissipated through contact with the body member 2 since the bridge rests directly on the sounding board.
WVhile I have shown this improved sound- .ing board in connection with a guitar it is obvious that it may also be applied to any other instrument, such as a mandolin, or violin, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent A musical instrument of the stringed type, comprising a body, a sounding board within the body, suitable means engaging the sounding board and the body for maintaining the board in position, a bridge carried by and secured to the sounding board, a plurality of openings in the body, the upper portion of the bridge projecting through one of the said openings and being adapted to support the strings of the instrument, and an opening in the sounding board which opening is under and registers with the other opening in the body.
