Description
0. KRO M ER.
Steam Whstes.
Patented August26`l873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO KROMEB, OF SANDUSKY, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-WHlSTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,166, dated August 26, 1873; application filed Aprn 2, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO KROMER, of Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement inSteam-Whistles; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective, and Fig. 2 a vertical section.
Like letters refer to like parts in each figure.
The nature of this invention relates to the construction of a steam-whistle so that a variety of tones may be obtained, and such tones regulated as desired, by means of a graduated scale of musical notes. The invention consists in constructing` the whistle with a double bell, one telescoping over the other, upon the principle of the trombone, so that high, low, and intermediate tones may be obtained at pleasure; and in connecting said Whistle with a raduated musical scale, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the bowl, and B the bell of a steam- Whistle, constructed in the usual manner, eX- cept that the bell B is open at top, as well as the bottom. C is another bell, with a closed top, as shown, which is telescoped over the top end of the inner bell B. This bell C is operated in its reciprocating movement by means of the rod D, to which it is secured.
The lower end of this rod may be secured to an index-linger, E, suitably pivoted at one end, while the other end, as the rod D, is elevated or lowered, points to a graduated scale, F, upon which is indicated, by the proper letters, the various musical tones. This index may be set to any of the letters on the scale, when the corresponding tone will be produced by the whistle.
This construction of the double bell B C, so
arranged that the latter will telescope over the former, is equally applicable to organ pipes and whistles.
I am aware of the construction of the niusical instrument known as the trombone, wherein the sound is obtained in the passage of the air through the instrument, its tone being regulated by the telescoping of its parts. My invention differs from that, as the sound is produced by reverberation against the closed end of the outside pipe or bell.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the bell C and rod D with the bell B, the bell O being adapted to slide into the bell B, as described.
2. A telescopic whistle wherein the bowl A and bells B and C are constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
OTTO KROMER.
