MELODY ATTACHMENT FOR KEY-BOARD INSTRUMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 86,219, dated January 26, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CARL FOGELBERG, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Melody Attachment for Key-Board Instruments; and I do A declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a detailed sectional view of my improved attachment, showing the valves all closed.
Fig. 2 is the same view as Fig. 1, but showing the attachment in position to sound one note.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved attachment for pianos and other key-board instruments, by means of which a flute solo or other melody, either with or without accompaniment, may be played upon the instrument by means of the same keys by which ordinary music is played upon said instrument; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the attachment, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents an air-chamber, which is designed to be attached to the lower part of the piano, where it will be out of the way, and almost out of sight.
The interior ofthe air-chamber A is divided up into the desired number of compartments by inclined partitions B, having holes through them for the passage of the air, and also for the passage of the valve-rods.
In the bottom of the chamber A are formed holes, one hole openin g into each compartment of the chamber A, except the first compartment, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
rIhe iirst compartment of the chamber A communicates with the bellows through an opening in the upper part of said box A.
Each of the compartments of the box A is provided with a pipe, O, the upper end of which is inserted in the opening leading into said compartment, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Each of the pipes O gives forth its own peculiar note, and such anumber of said pipes should be used as t0 form one, two, or more octaves, as may be desired.
Each of the compartments of the air-cham ber A is provided with a valve, D, so arranged that when lowered it may completely close the opening in the bottom of said compartment leading into the pipe O, and so that when raised it may cover the opening through the partition B, as shown in the drawings.
The valve D in the first compartment of the box A, when lowered, drops into a recess formed to receive it in the bottom of said compartment, and is designed to be used simply to shut off the air from or admit it to the compartments of the said box A, the particular pipe into which the air is admitted being regulated by the other valves, D.
The valves D are weighted, or made so heavy that when left free they may drop down, closing the openings leading into the pipes O.
The valves D are each provided with a valve-rod, E, leading up through the openings in the l partitions B and stuffing-boxes in the top of the airchamber A, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The valve-rod of the first compartment is connected with a pedal, so that the entrance of the air into the various compartments of the air-chamber A may be controlled at will.

Then it is desired that the attachment should be played alone, as in a flute solo or other melody, the ordinary strings of the instrument should be dampened in the ordinary manner, except that I prefer to arrange the damper-s in octave sections.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved melody attachment for keyboard instruments formed by the combination of the air-chamber A, inclined perforated partitions B, pipes C, valves D, and valve-rods E with each other, said parts being constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
