Description

dimmi tmre @met @time das@ :www
ERAS'IUS S. BENNETT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND JUS'IUS SMITH, OF
SAME PLACE.
l Letters Patent No. 83,822, dated November 10, 1868; antedated October 24, 1868 IIMPROVED STIRRUP.
To all 'whmn it may concern:
county, and State ofNow York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety-Stirrups; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference-being had to the acoompnf nying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a stirrup with one side entirely open, and so forming the same that itwill be impossible for the foot to become fastened or caught therein, inoase the rider should fall or be thrown from his horse. rEhe' nature and frequency of horrible and usually fatal accidents from this cause is too well kown to need more than simply a notice here. Being thrown from a horse eaun'ot be looked upon as being conducive to health, but very rarely results fatally, or even seriously, but being thrown, and having the tboteaught in the strrup, is almost certaiuand terrible death.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to' describe its construc- I tion and operation.
The accompanying drawings represent the stirrup,
`for the purpose set forth.
l which should be made of steel, as delicately wrought Beit known that I, EnAsTUs S. BENNETT, of the city,
as is compatible with snicient strength.
l) represents the strap, which passes through the upper end ,of the stirrup at c, a suitable aperture being made for the purpose. v
The stirrup should be curved, nearly as shown at e, and should be reinforced or strengthened at a.
I have shown the-point of the toe at B, slightly turned up, to prevent the stirrup slipping from under the foot. Any other device for this purpose may be substituted, as, for instance, a slight spring, fastened at its upper end, midway hetweeu o and e, its lower end just lapping over the toe of the stirrup, or it may be fastened mlderneath the stirrup, its loose end ourv ing over the foot. What I claim, and'desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, isf- 'A stirrup made with one side entirely open, 'with a device for preventing its slipping, substantially as and Witnesses J CHN J me, '3. 0. MURRAY.
