Description

inl
mw-easeew FREDRICK HENDERSON, OF MA RIE'ITA,5OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND ISAAC ATKINSON.
Letters Patent No. l87 ,7 73, dated Mcm-ch 16, 1869.
IMPROVE!) SHANK-LASTER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern y Beit known that I, FREDRICK HENDERSON, of Marietta, in the county of Vfashington, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Shank-Laster; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. l
This invention is an improvement on that of Steele 85 Henderson, patented October 22. 1867, No. 7 0,040, and consists mainly in the employment of a triangular projection, or lever, i.nstead of au eccentric or cam, as will hereinafter more fully appear.`
The drawing represents a side elevation of my invention.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invent-ion, I will proceed to describe fully its construction and operation.
A and B represent the plncer-jaws, the one marked A being pivoted to the elastic strip of metal C, which is secured to the handle D; the other, B, being .provided with the arm E These details, being similar to those ofthe preceding patent, need not be particularly specited.
Instead of the cam or eccentric, which forms a part of the invention referred to, I employ the projection F, which is provided with the concave face j; on which the end ofthe arm E slides.
This construction is found by experience to be preferable to the old, inasmuch as the eccentric lever is liable to slip ou the upper leather, whilc,by my construction, the slightly concave surfaceG, between the projections H andI, ei'iectually obviates such ditliculty. The concave face f is also of great advantage.
IVhen the jaws are opened, and the leather placed therein, the end of arm E is passed over the point H, where it is pressed against the face f by means of the spring G, and the hold on the leather is .rendered extremely secure.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The jaws AB and spring C, in combination with the projectionF, consisting ofthe concave faces f and projectionsH and I, arranged and operated substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
This speciiicationsigned and witnessed, this 16th day of January, 1869.
FREDRIOK HENDERSON.
