Description

v EGBERT REED, SR.,` OF DENVER, COLORADO.
COLLAR-BUTTON'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, i908.
Application led March 25, `190'2. Serial No. 364,553.
To all whom 'tt may concern:
Be it known that I, EGBERT W. REED, Sr., a citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar- Buttons, of which the following is a specification. y
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in vcollar buttons and more especially in the kind of buttons employed to connect the rear portion of the collar to the neckband of the shirt.
The object of my invention is to provide the button with means which being attached to the head thereof, may be brought in engagement with the necktie surrounding the collar, for the purpose of preventing its movement after the same has been properly adjusted. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated and in which Figure 1 represents a sectional, fragmentary view of a shirt, collar and necktie with my improved button in operative position, Fig. 2 a sectional, exaggerated view of a button with its head and the necktie holder in the folded position, Fig. 3- a similar view with the parts in the operative position, Fig. 4- an inside elevation of the button head with my attachment in the position shown in Fig. 3, Fig. 5 a similar view of the head with the holder in the position illustrated in Fig. 2, and Fig.- 6- an enlarged, longitudinal sectional view of the lower portion of the head and the necktie holding means.
Referring to the drawings, the reference character 5 designates the shoe of the collar button, 5a the therewith rigid shank and 4 the head which in the construction shown may be folded in alinement with the shank for the purpose of facilitating its insertion in the buttonholes of the shirt and collar. I wish it understood, however, that the means employed by me to maintain the necktie in its adjusted position' are independent of the particular construction -of the head or the latters relation to the shank and that, for this'reason, it. may be applied as effectively to buttons whose head is rigid with its shank as to the button illustrated in the drawing.
The means for holding the necktie consist lof a pin or spur '6, formed at one of its eX- tremities with an apertured knuckle 6a and pivotally connected with the lower portion of the head 4 by means of a pin 7 which eX- tends laterallyvthrough the aperture in the knuckle 6a and therewith registering apertures in the inturned sides of the head.
When not required for immediate use, or when the head is being inserted through the button holes of the collar and the neckband of the shirt, the spur may be moved inwardly so as to lie along -the inner surface of the head 4 as is shown in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings, while, when in the operative position illustrated in Figs. 3 and 5, it projects inwardly and approximately at right angles thereto.
The operative position of the device. is
illustrated in Fig. 1. of the drawings in whichthe numeral 2 designates the shirt, 1 the thereto attached collar and 3 the surrounding necktie. The spur 6 on the head 4 of the button which connects the collar to the shirt band, projects inwardly from the latter in the direction of the shoe 5 and by engagement with the necktie, maintains it in its adjusted position.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is The combination'with a collar button of a pin hingedly connected with its head, normally in substantially parallel relation to its shank, the said pin being of less length than the shank so as to engage a scarfband interposed between the head of the button and a shirt band in which the said button is i11- serted.
