' T all whomit mag concem:
Be it known thet 1, JOSEPH F. SADLER, e citizen of the United Stetes, residing et Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles end Stehe 01 Celifornie, heve invented new end useful I1nprovements in Semple-Holders 01 which the following is e specificetion.
My invention reletes 110 meens for holding semples 01 oloth thet is cerried in stock in bolts; end the objeot thereof is to provide meens to hold e semple of the oloth of which the holt is oomposed in e position of 0011- venient eooess end 110 be eble to furnish prospeotive purchesers of oloth from the holt with e semple 0f the seme et e minimum of ex ense.
eretofore it hes been the custom emong dry goods merchents to furnish prospeotive oustomers with semples from bolts of cloth by cutting 01l from the free end of the cloth e short piece thereof end of suflloient size 130 eneble the customer to tell the oherecter end quelity of the oloth when ewey fro1n the store. These semples ere usuelly out from one side of the holt, thereby leeving the end of the oloth with e notoh cut out 01 alle corner, end when e pieoe of oloth is purohesed from the holt, meesurement is teken on the side of the notch, end so muoh of the oloth es was not out out when the notch wes haken therefrom goes to the purcheser without the merohent being peid therefor, end it is one of the objeots of my invention to do ewey with the neoessity of cutting these pieoes from time to time fron1 the holt of clotlr In the drewings: Figure 1 is e perspective view of my improved semple holder deteohed from the holt. Fig. 2 is e perspeotive view 01 e holt of cloth provided Wih my improved semple holder. Fig. 3 is e longitudinel seotion 015 my improved semple holder with e sem le in pleoe therein end with the holt of clot shown in dotted lines.
1 prefer to form ehe body 01 my se1nple holder of sheet metel 6 with the edges thereof turned over e wire freme 7. The front end of this wire freme is preferebly bent downwerdly, end ehe front end 01 the body is like wise bent downwerdly es shown in Fig. 3, the osition of the semple holder shown in Fig. 1 being upside down. The edges of the down turned portion of the body ere turned end form e pocket for the reception of e oerd 8, upon Wh1h mey be written the cost prioe end selling prioe of the goods oonteined in the holt.
From the end of the holt of oloth 9 I auf; e semple strip 10 of e suflloient width 130 provide e good semple end extending eeross the whole width of the goods. I. teke this strip, whioh is the semple strip, end run it between the down-turned end of the top end the dwn-turned end of the wire, es shown in Fig. 3, end 1 run the seme up over e tension memher 11 Whi0h is secured with the body 011 the under side of the body near the front end thereof to the wire freme, end thence reerwardly beneeth ehe body end over the reer end of the wire freme end thence back '00- werd the fron with the 1ront end of the semple henging down e suflrloient distence to give the operetor e good hold of ehe seme. Tension memloer 1 1 oompresses the pieoe of cloth egeinst the body end provides e tension 011 the cloth neer the front end so thet the lest semple shell heve the seme tension on it es the first. I then insert the semple holder conteining the semple into the oenter of the holt of oloth ebove the usuel center boerd 011 whioh the cloth is folded end push the semple holder into the holt unoil it is conoeeled therein except the front end es shown in Fig.
2. Novv should e purcheser desire e semple- 01 the clo th conteined in the holt, all the selesrnen hes to do is to oetoh hold of the proj.ecting end of the semple strip, pull e suffioient length thereof out end out it ofl end give it 130 the prospeotive puroheser. This prooess cen be repeeted until ell of the semple strip is used up o1 until the holt of oloth is sold. Should the sernple strip be used up before the holt is sold, the semple holder cen-he lurnished with enother semple strip end repleced in the holt, end efter one holt is sold the semple holder oen loe used for enoher holt of goods. By this devioe the expense of furnishing semples 190 prospective purohesers is reduoed 130 e minimum.
Heving desoribed my invention, whe .1 cleim is 1. A semple holder, oomprising e wire freme; e metellic body olernped upon the wire freme end heving one end thereof termineting just before meeting one end of the wire freme, the oherend thereof overlepping the wire freme.
2. A semple holder, oomprising e wire frerne; e metellio body olemped upon the wire freme end hevingthe front end thereof projeoting over the wire freme end beno downwerdly end heving the edges of the downwerdly bent ortion bent to forma.
means 130 reoeive a card, said body portion terminating ab the rear a little short of the end of the wire frame.
3. A sample holder adapted 130 be inserted in a holt of goods, eomprising a rectangular wire frame bent downwardly at one end; and a metallie body clamped upon said frame,
said body terminating shortly before the unbent end of the frame and being bent over the bent portion of the frame.
4. A sample holder adapted to be inserted in a bolt of goods, eomprising a rectangular wire frame bent downvvardly 0n one end; a
sheet metal body resiliently secured over the dovvn turned end and adapted tehold the 15 sarnple strip against ehe down turned end; and a tens1on deviee situated on the body near the down turned end.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 14th 20 day of November, 1906.
JOSEPH F. SADLER.
