Description

No. 875,933. PATENTED JAN. 7, 1908.
W. E. KIMES. POLLOWER AND HOLDER FOR FILES.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT.5.1907.
WILLIAM E. KIMES, OF ALLIANCE, 61110.
FOLLOWER AND HCLDER FOR FILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Jan. 7, 1908.
Application filed September 5. 1907- Sarial No. 391.415.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. Kmns, a citizen of the United States, residing atAlliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful i improvements in Followers and Holders for Files; and I do hereby declare that the l'ollowing is a full, clear, and exact deseri 'ition of 1 the same, reference being had to the aeromanying drawing, making a part of this specication.
The present invention has relation to lollowers and holders designed to be used in connection with card'index files, bill files and analogous uses.
The object of the invention is to hold any desired number of cards, envelops or like articles in a drawer, such as are commonly used infiling-cases. The case or drawer, however forms no particular part of the present invention, except that a drawer or case of some kind must necessarily be used in connection with my improved follower and holder.
In the accompanying drawing :-Fi *ure 1 is a detached perspective view of the older and follower. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a drawer or case showing a number of cards placed in position and the follower located within the case in position to clamp" orb'in'cl' the cards or other articles in close compact form. Fig. 3 is a similar view, except the follower is brought into position to release the cards. Fig. 4 is av transverse section of the case or drawer showing the follower placed in position with reference to the drawer and illustrating the rear side of the follower or holder.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
In the accompanyin drawing, 1 represents the rear bar, whidli bar 18 formed of a length somewhat shorter than the width of the case or drawer 2. From the ends of the bar I extend the angled portions 3, from which extend members 4, 5, and (3 all of which pal ts are formed integral and of spring wire or metal.
For the pur )ose of providing means for holding the follower at the desired point of adjustment within the drawer 2, the various curved and spaced InQI'IIlXI'S 4, 5 and ti are Originally formed so that the members 4 will come in contact with the inner side faces of the drawer 2, by which arrangement the follower will be frictionally held at the desired point of adjustment. it will be understood that the members 4, 5 and ti will provide proper backing or support for the Various cards or other like articles that are to be placed or held in the drawer or case 2. The members 3 of the follower or holder are 10- rated at an acute angle to the members 4, 5 and (i and are so located for the purpose of proridi ng a means for holding the members 4,
5 and (5 in the position illustrated in Fig. 3
when the bar 1 and the members 3 are brought down upon the bottom of the case thereby holding the members 4 and 5 into such av position that the tops of the various cards will be free or released, when any particular card or other article can be easily withdrawn.
When it is desired to clamp the cards as illustrated in Fig. 2 the follower is brought into the position illustrated in Fig. 3 and when in that position the members 4, 5 and (5 will come against the rear face or back of the rearmost card. When it is desired to remove the follower or holder or to adjust the follower the top or upper ends of the n1enibcrs o are drawn toward each other, which in turn moves the member 4 away from the sides of the drawer or case 2 after which the --follrutcr 9anbe adjusted or removed as desired.
For the'purpose of preventing the marring of the inner faces of the inner case and at the same time provide better frictional contact the members 4 are inclosed in the tubes 7, which tubes are formed of some flexible or yielding material such rubber.
For t 1e )urpose of reducing friction during the time the follower is shifted from the position shown in Fig. 2 to tho )osition illushe members 3 are locateiliitan acute angle to the bar 1, as best illustrated in Figs. 1and-Livy which arrangement the principal contact pointis at the junction or bend of the members 4 and 5.
It will be understood that the members 4, 5 and (i are duplicated, or in other words, two series are formed and bv spacing the series or separating the series they can be extended or com ressed as desired.
Having ful 3: described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
i. A follower and holder for files of the class described said follower consisting of a bar, angled portions located at the ends of the bar and said angled portions provided with integral alternating curved portions, said alternating curved portions located at an angle to the members extended from the bar, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A follower andholder of the class described formed of a single piece of sprin Wire, consisting of a straight portion, angler portions leading from said straight portion and located at an acute an le to said bar portion, and integral curved card backing portions consisting of two series and the series spaced from each other, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. As an'improved article of manufacture, a follower of the class described formed of a single piece of spring material, backing members alternately connected together at their bottom and top ends and members extended at an angle to said backing members scenes 4. i s an improyed article of manufacture, f
a follower of the class described formed of a single piece of spring material, backing IHBIH bers alternately connected together at their bottom and top ends and members extended at an angle to said backing members and an integral bar connecting said angled members, and the outer backing member provided with elastic covering, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. WILLIAM E. KIMES."
W'itnesses A. S. ARMSTRONG, W. H. DRESSLER.
