To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. GoDLEwsxr, a citizen of the United States,-residing at St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis City and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Sash-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sash locking devices, and has for its principal object to provide a device of very simple and economical construction for holding window sashes and like slidable members in any position to which they may be adjusted, so that the sash may be positively locked either in closed or in open position, or any points between these two positions.
A further object of the invention is to provide a locking device which may be actuated by aremovable key, so as to be inaccessible when the key is removed.
WVith these and other objects in view, as
- will more fully hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain novel features of con struction and arrangement of parts, herei.n after fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a sash locking device constructed and arranged in accordance with the invention, the parts being in open or released position, in order to permit free movement of the sash. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the sash locked. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the operating cam, its shaft and a portion of the key. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the sash and frame, illustrating a modified construction.

lhe sash A is arranged to slide in a frame B and while only a portion of a single sash has been shown in the drawing, it is to be understood that the device may be applied to both upper and lower sashes as commonly used in windows, or it may be employed in connection with horizontally slidable sashes.
Fitting in a mortise in one of the vertical To the rear of the plate 1.6 is a second plate 20 carrying a pair of dogs or pawls 21, the outer ends of which are arranged to move through openings 22 formed in the plate 16 and engage with the teeth of the pinions for the purpose of locking the same from rotative movement, and thus fastening the sash in any position to which it may be adjusted. The dogs or pawls are normally held in inoperative position by means of coiled compres% sion springs 23 which surround the dogs and which bear at one end against the plate 16 and at the opposite end against the plate 20. Between the bottom of the box or casing and the plate 20 are arranged compression springs 25 which serve to force both plates outward and thus keep the pinions tightly in engagement with the rack, the force exerted being sufficient to hold the sash in position without the employment of auxiliary counter-weights. The springs 23 are heavier than the springs 25 so that while the force exerted by the springs 25 may be transmitted through the springs 23, the latter will normally hold the dogs or pawls in inoperative position.
Journaled in the rear portion of the box is a short shaft 30 to which is secured an oblong cam 31 of such contour that when the major diameter of the cam isparallel with the plates, the pawls 21 will be in release position. When the cam is rotated through an arc of 90 the plate 20 will be pushed in the direction of the plate 16 against the resistance offered by the springs 23 and the pawls 21 will thereupon be forced into locking engagement with the tooth of the pinions 18.
It will be noted that the cam 31 when in looking position bears against the rear wall of the box or casing as well as against the plate 20, so that there will be little or no strain on the shaft proper.
At one end of the shaft 30 is a key hole recess for the reception of a locking key such as as and this key may be inserted through an opening formed in the inner side of the sash for the purpose of turning the cam to locking or release position, and when the key is removed, the device is not accessible.
In the modified construction shown in Fig. 4, the two pinions 18 are carried by a plate rails of the sash is a metallic box 15 within 16, and on this plate are guiding straps 40 for the reception of a pair of slidable locking wedges 41. The adjacent faces of the ends of these dogs are provided with racks 42 which are engaged by a pinion 43 carried by a shaft 44 that is mounted in bearings in a small casing 45 secured to the plate. When this shaft is turned in one direction, the dogs are moved out of contact with the pinions, and when moved in the opposite direction the dogs move against the pinions and lock the same from rotative movement.
It will, of course, be understood that in the class of sash guiding devices shown, the pinions are placed a ainst the racks with sufficient force to hol the sashes without the employment of counter-balancing Weights, although the invention is, also, applicable to sashes having auxiliary counter-balancing devices of any type.
I claim In a device of the class specified, a rack, a
box or casing, a pair of parallel inner and outer plates arranged within said box or casing, pinions supported by the outer plate and intermeshing with the rack, locking dogs or pawls carried by the inner plate and arranged to pass through openings in the outer plate into locking engagement with the pinions, springs acting on the inner plate and tending to force the same outward, a pair of compression springs between the inner and outer plates and tending to keep the dogs or pawls in release position, and a cam arranged to engage the inner plate and force said dogs or pawls to locking position.
