SA-SH HOLDER AND FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N 0. 678,604, dated July 16, 1901. Application filed May 10,1901. Serial No. 59,5 84. (No model.)
{[0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTIS WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Johnsville, in the county of'Montgomery and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Holders and Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makinga part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has relation to that class of devices for fastening window-sashes, doors, or shutters in which a roller and wedge device are employed and the object thereof is to provide a simple, effective, and easilyoperating fastener or holder that will see urely retain the sash in an elevated or closed position.
The invention consists in a sash holder and fastener constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafterdescribed and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a front elevation of a car-window, showing my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2, a sectional elevation thereof; Fig. 3, a detail perspective view of the spring, on an enlarged scale, with which the crank-lever rod is connected; Fig. 4, a detail view of the lever-latch for operating the lever-rod and also looking the sash closed.
In the accompanying drawings, A repre sents the frame of a car, and B the windowsash thereof, although the invention may be equally as effective on window-sashes generally and also sliding doors and shutters.
Upon the inner side of the window-frame A is a suitable roller 0, with which comes in contact the inclined face of a wedge D upon the upper end of the arm E, the lower end of said arm being curved, as shown at a. The arm, with wedge, is operated by a horizontal lever-rod F, having cranks Z) at its ends which engage the curved ends a of said arms, the rod being held to the sill of the window-frame by brackets c or by any other suitable means that will admit of the rod freely turning on its axis.
Rigidly connected to the rod F is a suitable lever-latch G, which is adapted to engage a suitable keeper d upon the lower cross-bar of the sash, and when thus engaged the sash will be locked in a closed position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The rod F is rendered spring-actuated by means of a suitable spring H, having its body coiled around the rod and its ends bearing, respectively, against the window-sill and under side of the lever-latch, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. I do not wish to confine my invention to any special means of rendering the rod F spring-actuated, and any form of spring may be used in place of that shown that will act on the rod to bring it back to its normal position when pressure is removed from the lever-latch G and also when the sash is in a closed position to retain the latch in engagement with the keeper to lock the sash in a closed position. If desired, a thumb-piece 6 upon the outer end of the latch may be em ployed for convenience in pressing down the same, and when the latch is pressed down the rod F will be turned upon its axis and the inner end of the latch disengaged with the keeper d. This movement of the spring-actuated rod F will draw down the arms E and also the wedges -D from frictional contact with the rollers C and frame of the sash by means of the crank connections between the arms and the spring-actuated rod, thus admitti'ng of the sash being moved in its frame to close or open it, as the case may be.
The sash may be raised to any desired height either by hand or by mechanical means, and by removing pressure from the lever-latch the spring-actuated rod will assume its normal position and carry the latch in engagement with its keeper and force the wedges up against the rollers and sides of the sash-frame, thereby holding the sash stationary after it has been adjusted. The bearing-faces of the wedges D are brought against the inner side of the sash, and therefore press the sash outward against the window-frame to make a tight joint.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A sash holder and fastener consisting of rollers upon the window-frame, wedges adapted to operate in connection therewith, a spring-actuated rod upon the sill of the frame for operating the wedges, and a latch upon the rod adapted to engage a keeper on the sash, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A sash holder and fastener consisting of rollers upon the window-frame, wedges adapted to operate in connection therewith, a spring-actuated rod upon the sill of the frame for operating the wedges, and crank connections between the rod and wedges, substantially as and for the purpose described. v
3. A sash holder and fastener consisting of rollers upon the window-frame, wedges adapted to operate in connection with the rollers, said Wedges having arms curved at their lower ends, a spring-actuated rod upon the sill of the frame having crank ends engaging with the curved ends of the arms, and a lever-latch for operating the rod and also engaging a suitable keeper on the windowsash, substantially as and for the purpose pecified.
In testimony that Ijclaim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
