To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON DION, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful lVindow-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices designed they cannot be opened from the outside, and more particularly to a fastener which is adapted to be securely attached to one of the parting-strips between two windows and to fasten said windows securely to said parting-strip, and consists essentially of a suitable supporting member which may be in the form of a frame or case, such member iaving lips to steady and assist in retaining` the fastener in place, a camor eccentricprovided operating lever mounted in said supporting member, a parting-strip-engaging dog arranged to reciprocate in said niember and in operative connection with said lever, and an upper window-sash-engaging dog also arranged to reciprocate in said member and in operative connection with said lever, said dogs having iixed and movable aws, all as hereinafter set forth.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a safe, secure, and convenient window fastener or sash holder that can readily be applied to and removed from the meetingrail of a lower sash and one of the associated parting-strips and by means of which the sashes can be fastened to and released from the parting-strip at will, such holder being self fastening in itself so that it is not necessary to attach it by screws or other eX- traneous mea-ns to any part of the windowcasing or of either window. By providing a device which attaches, itself, to a partingstrip, as well as locking the windows to said strip, not only is a new and novel fastener involved, but safety and security are both insured to a greater degree than is usually the case in sash holders that have no intimate relationship or direct connection with the parting-strip.
A further object of the invention is to produce a lock of the kind designated above, that is very simple in construction, strong, durable and effectual in operation, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which` Figure l is a side elevation of a fastener which embodies a practical form of my invention, showing its application to a partingstrip and two windows; Fig. 2, a plan view and cross-section of the parts and members as they appear in the preceding' view; Fig. 3, a side elevation opposite to that shown in the first view; Fig. 4, an isometric view of the supporting frame or case for the operating parts of the device, and, Fig. 5, an interior view of the fastener as seen from the same direction as in Fig. 3, the parting-strip dog and the anti-friction roller therefor being omitted so as to plainly show the cani or eccentric by means or through the mediumA of which the two dogs are operated.
Certain portions of the outer easing are broken away in each of the views in order to disclose fully the parts behind or within and necessary to be seen for a clear understanding of the construction and operation of the device.
Similar figures refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the first three views portions of a parting-strip appear at 1 and fragments of an upper and lower window at 2 and 3, respectively, the upper window 2 being represented as lowered or open to some extent, for it is to be noted that this fastener will secure the windows as well when the upper one is open, no matter how much, as when it is closed, as will be made plain from the following' description. The lower window sash has the usual angular groove or channel 4t therein to receive the parting-strip, as best shown in Fig. 2.
A supporting case 5 is represented, the essential part of which so far as this invention is concerned is a vertical longitudinal center-piece 6 having an opening 7 through the same and provided with a laterally-extending lip'S at its rear end and with a lip 9 which extends downward from the bottom adjacent to such rear end. The lip 8 is designed to enter between the outer face of the parting-strip l and the inside face of the contiguous side-rail l() of the upper window sash, and the lip 9 to enter the channel 4 between the outer edge of said strip and the contiguous portion of the lower' window sash or of the adjacent end of the meeting-rail 11 of such last-mentioned sash. In addition to these lips there may be provided a third lip 12 which depends from the floor of the case 5 on the right-handside and in advance of the lip 9, and this lip 12 is designed to enter between the end of the meeting-rail 11, in front of the channel 4, and the adjacent face of the window-frame (not shown). The lips 8, 9 and 12 are thin enough to fit into the customary crevices between the windows and the supporting parts therefor. The aforesaid lips are in the several positions stated when the case 5 itself is properly7 located on the top of the meeting-rail 11 crosswise thereof. 4
In one side (the right) of the case 5 is a movable dog 13 which is capable of engaging the inner side or face of the partingstrip 1, and in the opposite side of said case is a second movable dog 14 which is longer than the first and capable of engaging the inner side or face of the side-rail 10. In each of the dogs 13 and 14, near the front end and opening through the top, is a slot 15 the edges of which afford bearing surfaces for an anti-friction roller 1G mounted on one of the protruding terminals of a pin or stud 17 carried by an operating lever or arm 18. The back part of each of the aforesaid dogs consists of a fixed jaw 19 and a movable jaw 2O the rear edges of both of which jaws are serrated. Each movable jaw 2() operates in a recessed portion 21 of its dog and has a rounded head 22 which is fitted to partially rotate in the corresponding or receiving part of such recessed portion, and there is a spring 23 having its lower terminal fixed in the dog and its upper terminal arranged to bear against the underside or edge of the movable jaw to retain the latter normally in its raised position or to swing it upward until adjacent edges of the movable jaw and dog above said head abut. YVhen thus disposed the back edges of each pair of fixed jaws 19 and movable jaws 20 are in the same vertical plane, but if either jaw 20 be forced downward against the resiliency of its spring 23 the upperl rear corner of such jaw will be projected beyond or behind such plane, as is clearly apparent.
The arm 18 is located on the left-hand side of the center-piece 6 and is provided on its right-hand side with a fixed disk or hub 24 which is journaled in the opening 7 in said center-piece. The stud 17 extends through the arm 18 and the hnb 24, at one side of the center of said hub, and protrudes at both ends to receive the rollers 16, as already noted. A slot 25 is formed in the top of the case 5 for the accommodation of the arm 18.-4 The eccentric arrangement of the stud 17 is of such a nature that, when the arm 18 is turned backwardly and downwardly, both dogs 13 and 14 are simultaneously actuated toward the rear, and, when said arm is thrown upward again, said dogs are simultaneously actuated toward the front.
The rollers 16 may, of course, be omitted without affecting my invention or seriously interfering with the successful operation of the same, since they are merely for antifric tion purposes. l
In practice, the device is first placed in position on the meeting-rail 11, with the lip 8 between the parting-strip 1 and the side rail 10, the lip 9 between said strip and said rail, and the lip 12 between said rail and the window-frame, and while the arm 18 is standing up as shown in Fig. 5. After being thus placed, the arm 18 is thrown over into the position shown in the first three views, with the result that the dogs 13 and 14 are crowded hard against the partingstrip 1 and the side-rail 10, respectively. The windows 2 and 3 are now securely fastened, since the dog 13 by reason of its engagement with the parting-strip 1, which latter is now grasped tightly between the lip 8 and the jaws 19 and 20 of said dog, prevents the window 3 from being raised, and the dog 14 by reason of its engagement with the side-rail 10 and because said window 3 is secured prevents the window 2 from being either raised or lowered. 1f, now, undue force be exerted on the window 3 in an effort to raise it, the movable jaw 20, which forms a part of the dog 13, turns on its head 22 in the recess 21 and is driven deeper into the parting-strip, thereby locking said window more firmly than before, and the same thing happens when an attempt is made to force down the window 2, this time the movable jaw of the dog 14 acting on the side-rail 19 to frustrate such attempt. Force might be successfully exerted to raise the window 2, but nothing would thereby be accomplished in the way of effecting an entrance to the room by way of the windows.
To unfasten the windows, simply raise the arm 18 and so retract the dogs 13 and 14 through the medium of the stud 17; the device can then be removed entirely, or may be left in place ready for relooking the windows, as desired.
The construction ofthe fastener is such that windows when locked therewith cannot be unlocked by manipulation of the fastener from the outside.
Although represented in the capacity of a right-hand fastener and necessarily therefore illustrated in connection with window members which correspond and are adapted for it, it is obvious that a similar fastener may be provided for use on the left-hand side of windows.
It is to be further noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction of my device, as well as in matters of size and shape, without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A window fastener comprising a suitable support adapted to reston the meetingrail of a lower window and to be attached to an adjacent parting-strip, dogs on opposite sides of such support, and an arm mounted in operative relation to such dogs and adapted to actuate them backward and forward.
2. A window fastener comprising a suitable support adapted to rest on the meetingrail of a lower window and to be attached to an adjacent parting-strip, dogs on opposite sides of such support, such dogs being provided with movable jaws, and an arm mounted in operative relation to said dogs and adapted to act-nate them backward and forward.
3. A window fastener comprising a suitable support ada'pted to rest on the meetingrail of a lower window and to be attached to an adjacent parting-strip, dogs on opposite sides of such support, such dogs having fixed jaws and being provided with movable jaws, and an arm mounted in operative relationto said dogs and adapted to actuate them backward and forward.
4. The combination, in a window fastener, with a suitable support adapted to rest on the meeting-rail of a lower window and to be attached to an adjacent parting-strip, and an operating arm provided with a hub mounted in such support and with an eccentric stud, of dogs on opposite sides of said support in operative connection with said stud, one of such dogs being shorter than the other.
5. The combination, in a window fastener, with a suitable support adapted to rest on the meeting-rail of a lower window and provided with a lip adapted to be inserted between an adjacent parting-strip and the upper window associated with said lower window, and with a lip adapted to be inserted between such strip and the lower window, of dogs arranged on opposite sides of such support and adapted respectively to engage said parting-strip and the upper window sash,
and means to force such dogs into engagement with the parting-strip and said sash and to release them from such engagement.
G. The combination, in a window fastener, with a suitable support adapted to rest on the meeting-rail of a lower window and provided with a lip adapted to be inserted betweenan adjacent parting-strip and the upper window associated with said lower window, with a lip adapted to be inserted between such strip and the lower window, and a lip adapted to fit on to the lower window sash in front of the parting-strip, of dogs arranged on opposite sides of such support and adapted respectively to engage said parting-strip and the upper window sash, and means to force said dogs into engagement with the parting-strip and said upper sash and to release them from such engagement.
T. The combination, in a window fastener, with a suitable support adapted to rest on the meeting-rail of a lower window and provided with a lip adapted to be inserted between an adjacent parting-strip and the upper window associated with said lower window, and with a lip adapted to be inserted between such strip and said lower window, of dogs arranged on opposite sides of such support and provided with movable jaws adapted to engage said parting-strip and the upper window sash respectively, and means to actuate said dogs into and out of locking position.
8. The combination, in a window fastener, with a suitable support adapted to rest on the meeting-rail of a lower window and provided with a lip adapted to be inserted bctween an adjacent parting-strip and the upper window associated with said lower win dow, of dogs arranged on opposite sides of such support and adapted respectively to engage said parting-strip and the lower window sash, the engaging parts of such dogs comprising fixed and movable jaws, and means to force said dogs into engagement with the parting-strip and said sash and to release them from such engagement.
