UNITED STATES CHARLES ROBERT MUELLER, JR, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SUSPENDING- DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Dec. 24, 1907.
Application filed February 18, 1907. Serial No. 357,805.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES ROBERT MUELLER, J r., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Suspending Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for suspending or hanging up books, pamphlets and other articles and its object is to provide means of this kind for books and pamphlets of considerable weight and bulk, that shall be stiff and easily put in place.
My invention consists of a continuous wire provided with a loop or ring at one end whereby the device may be suspended, a shank, a portion of the wire bent to form a loop which is preferably rectangular, and a hook at the end of the wire adapted to engage the shank.
My invention is illustrated in the acconipanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a portion of a book having one corner perforated and my improved device inserted. Fig. 2 shows the same with the shank of the suspending device bent so the book may be packed for shipment. Fig. 3 is a side View of the suspending device. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same before the loop is formed. Fig. 5 is a plan view on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
Similar reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
The suspending device is formed of a continuous piece of stiif wire, one portion of which is the shank 1, at the upper end of which is formed the suspending ring or loop 2. At the place of manufacture, the bend 3 is formed, .as is also the hook 4. The devices in the form shown in Fig. 4 are shipped to the consumer where the hook 4 is passed through a hole 6 in the book or pamphlet 7, and the parts 8 and 9 of the wire are bent to form a loop as shown in Fig. 3, the hook 4 being engaged with the shank. The shank 1 may be bent as shown in Fig. 2 at the factory, or after the suspending device is in position for use.
To facilitate the bending of this necessarily stiff wire, I form the flattened places 10, at which the wire will bend with considerable ease. The parts 8 of the wire may be arched, as at 11, to press against the book during this bending and assist in forming good square corners for the loop. This flattening of the wire also insures all the loops being bent at just the desired points and thus uniformity is possible. Tire one sixteenth of an inch thick may be thus bent and form suspending devices for books of considerable thickness, two inches in thickness not being too large for the device.
Having now explained my improvements, what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A suspending device formed of a wire having a ring at one end, and bent to form a four sided loop, one of the sides extending and having the ring at its free end, the side opposite being arched to facilitate bending the wire.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES ROBERT MUELLER, JR.
