Description

No. 831,772. I PATENTED SEPT. 25, 1906. S. G. CAMPBELL. REMOVABLE COVER FOR TABLETS AND BOOKS.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 5. 1905.
" W w mmmm SAMUEL G. CAMPBELL, OF LOGANSPORT, INDIANA.
REMOVABLE COVER FOR TABLETS AND BOO KS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1906.
Application filed August 5,1905. Serial No. 272,899.
To all whom it may conceive:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Logansport, in the county of Cass and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Covers for Tablets and Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to removable covers for tablets and books; and it has for its general object to provide a cover embodying simple and durable means whereby a tablet or book may be readily secured in it in such manner that there is no liability of the tablet or book being casually released or displaced during ordinary use and yet the tablet or book may be quickly and easily removed when desired without injury to either the tablet or book or the cover.
The invention contemplates the use of the cover on an indefinite number of tablets or blank or other books in succession, and its novelty, utility, and practical advantages will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating a tablet in an open state properly secured in the removable cover constituting the present and preferred embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view with the outer end portion of the stiff base of the tablet broken away. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section showing the tablet and removable cover as the same appear when closed.
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which A is a tablet of sheets of paper having a stiff base a, preferably of cardboard, and a flexible back I), connecting the sheets of pa per and the base a, and B is my novel removable cover. The said cover B comprises two stifl' sides or boards 0, a flexible back (I, preferably of'leather, connecting adjacent ends of the stiff sides or boards 0, so as to permit of the cover being opened out flat, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and closed, as shown in Fig. 3, and parallel tablet or book holding strips e, connected to the inner side of one of the stiff sides or boards, preferably the left-hand one, and extending in the direction of the length thereof. These holding-strips e are respectively formed of a single piece of tin or other thin sheet metal and have bases F interposed and secured between a lining layer g of paper or textile material and the side or board 6 of the cover, Figs. 2 and 3, and inwardlybent flanges g resting above the said bases F. The outer ends of the flanges g are bent downwardly, as indicated by h in Fig. 1, and hence said ends close the outer ends of the holding-strips and. serve as stops for the outer end of the tablet-base a.
In the practical use of my removable cover the tablet is introduced to position after the manner shown in Fig. 1that is to say, the outer end of the tablet-base a is arranged between the inner ends of the strips 6 and the said base is moved in the strips (2 until its said outer end brings up against the stops it at the outer ends of the strips. With this done it will be apparent that both the tablet and the cover may be opened and closed with great 'facility, and yet there is no liability of the tablet casually moving in the cover or being casually released therefrom. WVhen, however, the tablet is used up, its base a may be readily withdrawn from the holding-strips e and its place taken by a new tablet. In this way the cover may be used to advantage on an indefinite number of tablets in succession, so as to keep the tablets in good condition, prolong the usefulness of the same, and permit of their being conveniently carried from place to place without injury.
While my novel cover is designed more particularly for use in connection with tablets, it is obviously adapted to receive books having pasteboard or other stiff sides, one of the sides being received between the holdingstrips 6 in the same manner as is the tablet base a.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that while my novel cover is very simple and inexpensive it is adapted to efliciently hold a tablet or book and protect and prolong the usefulness of the same. It will be also gathered that the use of my novel cover on a tablet or book involves no alterations of or injury to the tablet or book whatsoever.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. As an article of manufacture, a removable cover for tablets and books, comprising stifl' sides or boards, a flexible back connecting said stiff sides or boards, a lining layer ar ranged on the inner face of one of the sides or boards, and parallel holding-strips, of thin sheet metal, arranged on the inner side of one of the stiff sides or boards and at right angles I and at right angles to the back; the said strips to the back and having bases interposed and having bases secured to the side or board and secured between said side or board and the also having inwardly-bent flanges g the outer lining layer and also having inwardly-bent ends it of which are bent downwardly to form I 5 flanges the outer ends of which are pressed stops. downwardly to form stops. In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature 2. A removable cover for tablets and in presende of two witnesses. books, comprising stifl sides or boards, a fleXi- SAMUEL G.
