To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMEs A. SHUFELT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oswego, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in garments, and more especially the facings for nether garments.

In the present embodiment of my invention, I have shown the same as applied to the facing strips for drawers, but it will be obvious that my invention is applicable to facings or the like, for any garment where 1t is desired to apply a folded curved edge of fabric to the same fabric, or another fabric.

My invention consists in folding the curved edge of a piece of fabric; gathering the inner edge of the fold on the convex portions of the curve; stretching the inner edge of the fold on the concave portions of the curve, and stitching the inner edge of said fold to the body of the piece of fabric folded.

My invention further consists in inverting a folded fabric such as above noted, and securing the same to another piece of fabric or to the same fabric, by a line of stitching passing through said fabrics, adjacent the folded edge.

My invention consists further in the parts, improvements and arrangements hereinafter shown, described and claimed.

In the drawings which show one embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a garment having my improved facing strip applied thereto, one corner of said facing strip being raised to show the mode of construction; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the facing strip, show ing the manner of folding the edge and secur ing the same to the body of the folded piece of fabric; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view, showing the manner of securing the facing strip to the body of the garment.

In carrying out my invention, a suitable piece of fabric 1, having a curved edge 2, is folded along said curved edge, as clearly shown in the drawing. This folded edge 2, as shown in the drawing, comprises straight portions, convex portions and concave portions. In order to make a flat fold along said curved edge, I have gathered the inner edge of the fold on the convex portion of the curve.

In Fig. 2 of the drawing, the convex portion of the curve extends from the line aa to the line b b, and said inner edge is gathered, as shown at 3. A line of stitching 4 is passed through the inner edge of the fold, which secures the same to the body of the folded strip. This line of stitching is formed simultaneously with the gathering of the inner edge of the fold, so that the gathers will be held in place and the folded edge caused to lay flat upon the body of the strip folded. The edge of the folded strip from the line b-b to 0-0, is concave, and. in order to cause the folded portion to lay flat upon the body of the folded strip, it is necessary to stretch the edge of the folded portion. This edge as it is folded is also stitched to the body strip, so as'to properly hold the same flat: upon the said body of the strip. It will be seen that I have thus formed a facing strip which has a neatly folded flat edge, and that said facing strips, as thus shown and described, may be sold and subsequently applied to garments. It should be understood, therefore, that my claims are sufficiently broad to cover a facing strip as an article of manufacture.

The facing strips shown in Fig. 2 and above described, is inverted and secured to the garment to which it is to be attached by a line of stitching f, passing through the facing strip and the garment adjacent the edge of the curved fold. The facing is also secured to the garment in the present embodiment of my invention, by a line of stitching 6, along the top edge, a line of stitching 7 along the front edge, and another line of stitching 8 running parallel with the line of stitching 7. It will thus be seen that my improved facing strip has a line of stitching passing therethrough, at a distance from the edge, but that said stitching does not pass through the body of the garment, and is, therefore, concealed, when viewed from the wrong side of the garment; and, furthermore, the facing strip is secured to the body fabric by a line of stitching which is parallel to the first line of stitching referred to, and this last named line of stitching passes through both the facing strip and the body of the garment. By this means of securing the facing strip to the garment, I am enabled to apply a facing strip having a curved edge in a neat and attractive manner.

It will be obvious that the character of the curve may be decidedly changed, Without departing from the spirit of my invention; that is to say, the curved edge may be sharply deflected and extend to a considerable distance on the front face of the drawer; or in fact, said curve may be of any other desired shape.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. A facing strip having a curved folded edge, including a convex curved portion and a concave curved portion, the inner free edge of the fold on the convex portions of the curve being gathered and the inner free edge of the fold on the concave portion, being stretched and a line of stitching passing through the fold adjacent its edge and the body portion of the facing strip.

2. A garment comprising a body portion and a facing strip, having a curved folded edge including a convex portion and a concave curved portionf the inner free edge of the fold on the convex portions of the curve being gathered and the inner free edge of the fold on the concave portion being stretched and a line of stitching passing through the fold adjacent its edge and the body portion of the facing strip, and a line of stitching passing through said folded edge and through the garment for securing the facing strip to said garment.
