MANUEL F. LUNA, OF SALTILLO, MEXICO.
MATCH-B OX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1907.
Application filed Januarylll. 1907. Serial No. 351.856.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MANUEL F. LUNA, a citizen of Mexico, and a resident of Saltillo, Coahuilla, Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match- Boxes, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention is an improvement in match boxes, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure lis a pespective view of a match box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 `is a vertical longitudinal section thereof on about line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 isa cross-section on about line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a holder removed fromithe case. Fig. 5 is a detail dperspective view showing said holder opene out. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view showing a modified form of match box in which the casing is hinged at one side to open. Figs. 7, 8 and 9 illustrate different forms of corrugated material, Fig. l0 illustrates a modified form of button for sliding the holder. Fig. '1l shows the corrugated material of the match channels formed of sand paper to provide an abrading surface.
In carrying out my invention I construct the box with a case A and with a holder B of a length less than the case A. This holder B in the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, is slidable within the case A, the ends of the case being open so that the holder can be slid back and forth to expose one or the other end of the holder at one or the other o en end of the case. To facilitate this slit ing movement of the holder, the case is slotted longitudinally at A and the holder B is provided with a button B projecting into the slot and forming a handle by which the holder may be slid back and forth within the case. The holder is provided with individual longitudinally disposed pockets or channels B2 for the matches C. These channels communicate at their inner ends with cross channels B3 preferably separated by an intervening rib B4, the heads C of the matches C lying in the cross grooves, as shown in the drawings. The longitudinal channels B2 are preferably formed by corrugated sheet material, it may be paper or other suitable substance, and a retaining plate B5 covering the o en sides of the corrugations and retainingv `t e matches therein.
This covering plate is preferably of sand paper to form an abrading surface against which the matches will rub as they are drawn longitudinally out of their channels, but the sand paper or abrading surface may be applied on the corrugated material if desired, as shown in Fig. 11.
In the construction shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3, the holder has two rows of match channels opening at each end, and the matches when disposed therein with their heads in the cross channels and their other ends projecting from the longitudinal channels will be inclosedwithin the casing when the holder is at a central point between the ends of the casing. Now by sliding the holder to one or the other end of the casing the match ends will be exposed, and the matches may be individually drawn out of the holder from their respective channels ignited.
As constructed, the match box is adapted to be carried in the ocket and can be conveniently operated w enever desired.
In Fig. 6, I show a somewhat different construction of casing in which the latter is formed of two sections D and D, flexibly united at one edge D2 so they may be opened, the match holders E constructed with longitudinal and cross channels, and a corrugated material as before described are secured to the sections midway between the ends thereof so the outer ends of the matches will be inclosed within the case and yet will be -convenient of access when the case is opened. By this construction also it will be noticed that I employ small single rows of channels at the opposite ends of the holder.
Manifestly the match holder may be made of paste-board, wood, metal or other suitable material.
It will be understood t-hat the matches may be supplied to the holders when the latter are opened, as shown in Fig. 5, and the holders can be subsequently closed and applied to the casing.
Any suitable -form` of matches, such as wax, wood, paste-board or the like may be employed.
The outer side of the cases may receive advertisements either of the maker of the matches or others, as may be desired.
I claiml. A match box comprising a casing open at both ends, and a match holder of a length less than the length of the casing and slidable longitudinally therein between the opposite open ends of the casing, the casing having a longitudinal slot and the holder having a button projecting thereinto and forming a handle by which the holder may be moved Within the casing, said holder being provided with longitudinal channels opening at its opposite ends and Within which individual matches may be placed and moved longitudinally and with cross channels at the inner 'ends of said longitudinal channels for reception of the heads of the matches and With a rib or partition extending' between the cross channels, substantially as and for the pur- -pose set forth.
the inner adjacent'ends of said longitudinal channels substantially as set forth.
v3. A match box comprising a casing open at both ends, and a holder movable longitudinally in the casing whereby its opposite ends may be brought adjacent to theirl respective ends of the casing and having longitudinal channels for matches, said channels opening toward the opposite ends of the casing, substantially as set forth.
4;. A match holder having at each of its opposite ends a series of longitudinal channels for individual matches and supplied with abrading material, cross channels at the ends of the longitudinal channels, and a rib or partition between the adjacent cross channels, substantially as set forth.
