SPBCIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,903, dated March 16, 11386.

Be it known that I, ALPHoNso D. WAs'rE, of Galesburg, Knox county, Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in File'Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improved file box constructed as fully described hereinafter, the object of the same being topermit papers to be readily packed and extracted with facility, separately or together.

In the drawing, the figure represents a perspective view looking from the rear ot'a filebox constructed in accordance with myinvention.

A, B, B, and 0 represent, respectively, the bottom, two sides, and front end of a rectangular box or receptacle forming the body of the file-box. This receptacle is partially covered by strips a I), secured transversely across the top of the same, at or near each end, there being a notch, c, at the outer edge of the strip 1), and a corresponding notch at the edge of the bottom A, for a purpose described hereinafter. An end cover, F, slides at the end of the receptacle in guides in the strip b and bottom A, and is provided with a spring-catch, 2', (shown in dotted lines,) secured to its inner side and bearing against the edge of one of the sides, B, when the cover is closed. As the papers to be placed within the file are approximately the length of the same, (fileboxes of different sizes being generally used with papers of different lengths,) they are slightly curved or bent when inserted, so as to admit of their ends passing beneath the top strips, a b, of the receptacle, after which they can Serial No. 192,616. assume a level position and lie smoothly within the box, and are securely retained by the overhanging strips a 12.

Access can be had to the papers for removal at any time by withdrawing the cover F, and the notches 0 permit the ends of the papers to be easily grasped, so as to remove the entire mass or select any paper therefrom.

It will be obvious that the cover F may be hinged or otherwise movably secured to the box, and, if desired, may be provided with any suitable locking device.

I do not limit myself to the precise construction shown, as the same may be modified or changed without departing from my invention.

I claim- 1. A tile-box, open at the top for the insertion of the papers, provided with overhanging strips a b and with a transversely-n'iovable end cover F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, in a file-box having an open top and a notched bottom, of the top end strip a and the top end strip I), having the notch c, and transversely-movable end cover F, provided with a retaining device, substantially as and for the purpose described.
