Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 1908.
Application filed November 15, 1907. Serial No. 402,341.
T 0 all where it may concern:
Be it known that I, awman: LEE, a
subject of the King of Norway, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to match boxes of that type including a casing and a slide mounted within the casing.
One object of my invention is the provision of a match box wherein the slide is so constructed as to permit of the removal of only a single match at a time, thus adapting the box for use as a single delivery pocket match safe.
A further object of my invention is to provide a match box wherein the slide is so constructed that the same can be removed from the casing and used as a single delivery wall match safe.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a match box which is simple in construction, etlicient in use and cheap in manufacture.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts here inafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a match box constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on a plane extending centrally and transversely therethrough. F 3 is a perspective view illustrating the manner in which the slide can be used as a single delivery wall match safe. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on a plane extending centrally and longitudinally therethrough. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the slide of the match box is constructed, and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the casing of the match box is constructed.
The casing 1 of the match box is preferably rectangular in cross section, and is fully open at its ends. The casing is also preferably constructed of a single blank of flexible material 2, which is adapted to be bent on the dotted lines 3, and have its ends secured together to provide the casing.
The slide consists of match receptacles 5, which are secured together in relatively spaced relation by a bendable web 4. The match receptacles comprise front walls 6,
i i i 1 i l l 1 l k and side walls 8. The web 4 forms an integral part of the rear walls 7 of the match receptacle. The lower ends of the front walls 6 are cut away to provide finger recesses 9 and intermediate yielding retaining tongues 10. The side walls of the match receptacles are inclined to space the upper ends of the front walls 6 from the rear walls 7 and to position the tongues 10 in engagement with the rear walls, thus providing the receptacles with flaring entrances and contracted discharge openings. The tongue 10 of each match receptacle is adapted to prevent the accidental discharge of matches and to yield under pressure to permit the removal of a single match at a time, the match being adapted to be grasped through one of the finger recesses 9, in a manner that should be apparent.
The rear wall 7 of the upper match receptacle is provided with an integral extension forming a flap adapted to be bent on the dotted line 11 to close the entrance to the upper match receptacle 5. The web 4. is adapted to be bent on the dotted line 12 to close the entrance to the lower receptacle 5. That portion of the flap above the dotted line 18 is adapted to be bent down into contact with the front wall 6 of the upper match receptacle so that when the slide is within the casing 1, it is impossible for the closure of this receptacle to become accidentally opened. After the web t has been bent to close the lower match receptacle, the same is adapted to be bent in a reverse direction on the dotted line 14 to position the rerear walls 7 ceptacles one in engagement with the other and provide the slide of the match box, which is inserted in the casing 1. When the receptacles are in slide form, the discharging openings of the receptacles are respectively located on opposite sides of the slide whereby to enable a match to be withdrawn from either receptacle on Withdrawing the slide from the casing.
In view of the manner in which the receptacles are closed, it is impossible to remove matches therefrom except through the discharge openings, and only a single match at a time can be removed from each receptacle. When it is desired to remove a match, the slide is moved into position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. If it is desired, the slide can be unfolded and used as a wall match safe, the same being adapted to be hung upon a nail through the medium of an opening in the upper end of the said flap. The slide is adapted to be constructed of a single blank of material, shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
It should be apparent from the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that I provide a match box which can be used either as a single delivery pocket match safe or as a single delivery wall match safe; and that the same is simple in construction, eflicient in use and cheap in manufacture.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of the invention should be understood without a further extended description.
Changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having fully described and illustrated my invention, what I claim is:
1. A match box comprising a casing and a slide, said slide consisting of a plurality of match receptacles, and a web connecting the match receptacles, each of said receptacles being provided with finger openings and an intermediate spring tongue.
2. A match box comprising a casing and a slide, said slide consisting of a plurality of match receptacles having entrances and discharge openings, and a web connecting the match receptacles, said web being adapted to be bent to arrange the match receptacles in slide form, the respective discharge openings of the receptacles being arranged on opposite sides of the slide.
3. A match box comprising a casing and a slide, said slide consisting of a plurality of match receptacles havingentrances and discharge openings, a web connecting the match receptacles, and a closure for one of the match receptacles, said web being adapted to be bent to arrange the match receptacles in slide form and to close the entrance of the other match receptacle, the respective discharge openings being arranged on opposite sides of the slide.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
