MAURICE VANDERPOOLE, OF WEARE, NEWV HAMPSHIRE.
'MATCH-B OX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,940, dated July 20, 1897.
Application filed October 2, 1896. Serial No. 607,703. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LMAURIQE VANDERPOOLE, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of East Weare, county of Hillsborough, and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match- Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in match-boxes, the object thereof beingto provide an article of this character adapted for delivering but one match at a time, whereby unscrupulous persons will be prevented from appropriating quantities of matches from boxes located in public places without the necessity of expending considerable time and energy in the process of extracting them.
The device is simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive and it can be made in any desired ornamental shape.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved match-box. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional elevation taken on a line a x of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional elevation taken on a line y y of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a plan View of a slide forming part of my invention. v
In the practice of my invention I provide a casing A,which ispreferably square in crosssection and which has its side walls to extended downwardly, the end walls a being formed integrally therewith or secured thereto by any suitable means, whereby a closed compartment a is provided. From these said side walls are extended downwardly vertical end. It is further provided with upwardlyextending arms 6 adapted for loosening and shaking the matches during the operation ofdelivering the same. The slide B is provided at its outer end with a knob B, adapted for use in operating it.
As a means for closing the box a lid 0 is provided. This said lid has a knob 0 formed thereon for handling the same and an aperture c therethrough for engagement with a bolt D, adapted for looking it. This said bolt is journaled through a lug E, forming part or secured to the front wall a of the box, and it is normally pressed outwardly by means of a spiral spring 6, which is located between the said lug and a collar 61, secured to the bolt D, and outward movement of the bolt D is limited by means of its head cl.
To further secure thevlid O to the box, the front wall a thereof is provided with rearwardly-projecting lugs f, which engage with the lid 0 and prevent the removal thereof by an upward movement.
In order to remove the lid, it is necessary to force the bolt D inwardly until it leaves the aperture 0. The lid can then *be moved in-a rearward direction until it is released from the lugs f, when it can be entirely re moved from the casing and the same can be 'filled with matches.
In the operation of the device one match will always rest within the recess of the slide B, its end portions being located between the arms b and the lugs b, whereby lateral movement of the latter is prevented. Now to secure a match it is simply necessary to pull the slide B outwardly until the arms 17 con tact with the front wall a of the casing. The slide will then be extended to a sufficient extent to permit of the ready removal of the match. It is then again forced inwardly and a match is automatically dropped within the recess 17. The arms 17 shaking the matches sufficiently will cause one of them to drop into position for delivery.
I do not confine myself to the specific details of construction as herein described and illustrated, as it is obvious that under the scope of my invention I am entitled to slight variations of design and more structural detail.
Having thus described my invention, what wardly therefrom; with a sliding receptacle which communicates with said channel, said sliding receptacle having upwardly-extending arms projected therefrom for shaking matches, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 27th day of September, 189G.
MAURICE VANDERPOOLE. lVitnesses:
