Be it known that I, PAUL LrEsKAR, a subject of the King oi Norway7 and a resident oi Munkegaden 16, Drontheim, Norway, have invented certain new and useiul Improvements in Devices ier Attaching Brushes and the Like to a Stale, of which the following is a specification.

rhe present invention relates to a device ior attaching brushes7 and the like to their stales.

It has been proposed to apply to the bottom end of the stale a holder which grips the brush firmly, and which allows oi the same being changed or replaced when desired. My invention relates to an improved iorm oi holder. The lower end oi the stale cut oit at an oblique angle is made to lie flat on the upper suriace oi the brush. Anv arrangement of claws and a spring clamp made from stout wire iiXed on the bottom ol the stale assure a firm attachment oi the brush.

ln the drawings two iorms oi construction are shown.

Figure l shows a iront view oi the new device with a brush in position. lig. 2 shows a side view oi the brush holder with a brush in position. Fig. 3 shows a side view of the same iorm oi construction as Fig. l.

The handle or stale o. is provided on the front oi the lower end with two or more claws b which serve to iorm a iirm support ior the iront end oi the .brush c. d is a clamp which is fastened on each side o the handle, and by means oi a iew windings eis made into-the iorm oi a spring. The lower end of the stale a is advantageously cut ott obliquely, so that it makes a good engaging suriacef [or the upper surface oi the brush c. The brush is thereiore firmly secured between the oblique end oi the stale, the claws in iront b and the clamp at the back d. The loosening and uniastening oi the brush c is worked by operating the spring clamp d. Since the iorce of the spring is comparatively great it is desirable to attach a lever contrivance to operate this spring clamp.

ln the drawings two forms oi construction are shown. In the iorm oi construction shown in Fig. 2 the spring clamp (l presses on the brush c; a bent intermediate part s clasps round and under the spring clamp d, and the ends are jointed at the sides of the stale to the short arms r oi the lever t, T. The lever t, 1* is bent round the pin m on each side oi the stale. The pin m forms the iulcruin oi the lever. The long arm t is bent round at the back oi the stale. On raising the long arm t oi the lever, the short arm forces out the bent part s, which thereby raises the spring clamp d from the brush. The latter is then free and can be easily taken out.

In the orm of construction shown in Figs. l and 3 the bent intermediate part n clasps round and under the spring clamp d, and its ends are attached at the sides oi the stale to the short arms g of the lever h, g. The lever h, g is bent round the pin m on each side oi the stale. YThe pin m iorms the fulcrum oi the lever. The long arm h of the lever is bent round the 'front part oi the stale and on pulling it outwards irom the stale the spring clamp is raised by the intermediate bent part n. The brush can then be removed.

The spikes o are intended to provide additional security especially against slipping. Bymeans oi the screw p and washer q the claws are secured more iirmly on the iront part oi the stale, and prevented from bending out. v

The new device can be applied in all cases in which a brush is used with a handle. With a short shait and scrubbing brush it is especially suitable for use by butchers and for household purposes. lnconjunction with a long stale it is suitable ior brooms and brushes ior sweeping.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- 1. In a device for attaching brushes and the like to a stale the combination of a clamp, spiral springs sunk in recesses in the sides of the stale actuating said clamp, claws projecting over the front end of the stale, xed in position by means of a washer and screw, an oblique surface on the end of the stale, adapted to rest firmly on the top ot the brush, the brush being fixed between the clamp, claws, and oblique surface, meansfto prevent thebrush from slipping, and means to draw back the clamp, substantially as set forth.

2. In a device for attaching brushes and the like to a stale, the combination of a clamp, spiral springs sunk in `recesses in the sides of the stale actuating said clamp, claws projecting over the front end of the stale, fixed in position against the stale by lmeans of a washer and screw, an oblique surface on the end of the stale resting firmly on the top of the brush, said brush being Xed between the clamp claws, and oblique surface, points projecting from the. oblique surface adapted to prevent the brush from slipping, a pin passing through the stale, a lever pivoted on the ends`of said pin at each side of the stale, and a part jointed on the shorter arms of said lever and bent round the clamp adapted to pull back the clamp against the action of the spring when the lever is Worked, substantially as set forth.
