Be it known that T,JoIIN F. MILLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at De troit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Tmprovement in Attachments for Brusheaand declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as Wlll enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specificatlon.

This invention relates to attachments for brushes, and its object is a device adapted to be secured to the back of a brush and having notched standards or lugs of a form to receive the ordinary mop head whereby, by attaching the mop head to these standards the brush is provided with a long handle enabling the operator to use the same while standing upright. There are a number of. commonly known types of mop heads on the market, and a feature of this attachment is in the provision of standards or lugs peculiarly formed to adapt it for use with any of the several types of attachments. These and other objects and the several novel features of the invention are hereinafter more clearly described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is an end elevation of a brush showing my improved attachment and the connection of a mop head therewith.

The brush forms no part of this invention, and the attachment may be secured to a scrubbing brush or the like of any desired form. The device preferably consists of a plate or base member 1 positioned longitudinally of the brush and having terminal portions apertured to receive the screws 4. by means of whichthe device is secured to the back of the brush. Extending upwardly near each end of the base member 1 are the lugs 5 substantially of the form of a triangle in major outline. At one edge each lug is provided with the notches 6, 7 and 8, and on the opposite edge it is provided. wi h notches 9, l0 and 11. These notches are de signed, and the lugs are of a size to fit any of the well known types of mop heads. The

brush is indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 from which the utility of the notched standards may be readily understood.

As will be seen in the said Fig. 1, the mop handle indicated at 12 is provided with the usual terminal portion indicated at 13 which is adapted to engage in the notches 9 and 10 of the standards, the head 13 being of a length to engage both standards. The handle is provided with a collar 14 slidable on the handle, and this collar has riveted thereto a lever 15. Pivoted to the lever on opposite sides is the bail or clamping member 16 positioned eccentricallyon the lever relative to its pivot point 14 on the collar. The bail may fit in notches G on the forward side of the standards, and by forcing the lever 15 downward on the handle in the position shown by the drawing, the standard is clamped between the bail and the head 13, which securely holds the brush and enables the same to be moved over a floor in a scrubbing or brushing operation by means of the handle 12. If the spring 18 which is positioned between the collar 14 and the head 13 is very stiff, the bail may be inserted in the notches 7 provided therefor with the head 13 in the position shown. A mop head of another type of head 13 may be used as shown at the left of Fig. 1 with the bail thereof engaging in the notches 11 and the head engaging in the notch 8 of the standards. From this illustration it will be readily understood that the arrangement of these notches is to enable mop heads of various constructions to be attached to the brush without necessity of having a separate handle for such purpose. For instance the notch 11 is somewhat larger than the other notches, being semi-circular in outline in which would fit a binding member of comparatively large cross section as for instance one of coiled wire.

From this description the function of the several notches in the standards 5 is believed to be made clear without necessity of illustrating all the various types of mop heads which may be used with the device which are now well known. It is further evident that by the construction of attachment as shown, a device is provided that is comparatively inexpensive and yet adapted for use with a great variety of mop heads or similar devices having portions adapted to grip the standards after the manner disclosed. It is further evident that the shape of the notches may be altered'and the size of the attachment varied to a considerable extent without departing from the spirit of this invention.

What 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. The combination With a handle having a fixed and movable clamping member, of a base member attachable to the back of the brush and provided with an integral vertical standard at each end, each standard being provided With a plurality of notches in each opposite edge of difi'erent shapes and angles permitting the positioning of the fixed clamping member in any one of the notches of either side and of the movable clamping member in any one of the notches of the side opposite the fixed member-whereby the handle member may be positioned at ingles of different degrees relative to the ase.

2. An attachment for brushes and the like consisting of a base member attachable to the back of a brush and having a vertical standard adjacent each end of the device having notches in the opposite edges thereof of varying shapes and angles adapted to receive handle binding members of various types as described and to position the handle at angles of various degrees relative to the base. 1
