FASTENING MEANS FOR COLLARS.

To all lwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. PIERCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Placerville, in the county of Eldorado and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Means for Collars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in means for fastening a collar at the rear to shirts, and is primarily designed to provide a fastening means which is carried by the shirt and which may readily be attached to any existing forin of collar having a rear button hole therein. i

While in the drawings I have illustrated a particular form of collar and in combination a particular structure ol tie and means for detachably securing the same to the collar, which features are made the subject-mattei' of a separate application, still as the particular invention does not reside in these details, I will only give a brief description of same.

For the purpose of disclosure reference is had to the accompanying drawings, illustrating a practical e1n bodiment of the invention, in which,

Fig. 2 is a longltudinal section al view through my improved fastening means, showing the application of the same to the back of a shirt but with the collar omitted, and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view through one of the tie ends and the tab of a collar, showing the means of attaching the tie ends of the form illustrated to the` collar.

l designates the main or body portion of the collar provided on its lower edge with tabs or fiaps 2 having button holes adapted to have secured thereto the ends 3 of a separable tie. These tie ends, as shown in Fig. 3, are provided with the spaced flaps 4 adapted to extend on each side of the tabs 2 and be secured thereto through suitable button holes and a button 5.

Referring' to the particular invention, G designates aportion of the rear of a shirt having the turned over .neck band 7 forming a space 8 between the body 6 of the shirt and the turned over portion 7.

For the purpose of giving rigidity to the fastening and to protect the shirt from tearing, I provide a thin inextensible but laterally flexible strip 7, preferably of metal or whale bone, the lower end of which is` connected to the shirt by being secured between the flaps 9 of a reinforced flexible member l0,.the lower end of Specification of Letters Patent.

In operation, referring to Figs. I and 2, when the collar is to be fastened to the shirt, the tape 13 having been threaded through the opening ll in the strip 7 and also through the opening l2 in the neck band, is thence passed through the rear button hole I6 of the collar, and then being passed downwardly, is secured by means of the button hole l5 to the button 17 on the shirt. Thus a fastening device is provided which is always attached to the shirt, and by which the collar may be readily secured thereto Without the troublesome bother so often experienced by the inability of getting collar buttons through an overstarched button hole of a turned down collar without greatly soiling the collar and creasing same out of shape, and avoiding the discomfort incident to the presence and pressure of a collar button on the back of the neck, where the pressure of the starched collar and of the coat collar thereon often cause considerable discomfort.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:

l. '.lhe combination with a shirt, of means for securing a collar thereto, comprising a flexible tape secured to said shirt at one end and provided with a threadingpin, rigidly mounted moans carried by said shirt and provided with an opening adapted to aline with the rear button hole of the collar, said openingand button hole adapted to have passed therethrough the free end of said flexible tape, said flexible tape being' provided at its free end with a button hole and a button on said shirt for securing said tape to said shirt after having been passed through the button hole of said collar, substantially as described.

2. 'lhe combination with a shirt, of means for securing a collar thereto, comprising a thin longitudinal inextensible flexible member, secured to said shirt and provided with an aperture adapted to register with the rear button hole of a collar and said shirt having a button secured thereon, of a flexible tape connected at one end to the shirt and\provided at its other end with a button hole, whereby the free end of said tape is adapted to be passed through the aperture in said inextensible member and the button hole of the collar and then secured to said button on said shirt, substantially as described.
