SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,970, dated January 14, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JULIUS T. ROSENHEIMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelope -Fastenin gs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Myinvention eonsistsin thenovel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which I have illustrated two forms in which I have contemplated embodying my invention, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the back of an envelope embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing an envelope of different shape embodying a slight modification of my invention. Fig. 4. is a sectional view of the same.

In the drawings, A represents the rear portion of the envelope, and B the flap which is folded over upon the part A. The flap B is provided witha securing-tongue b, which is preferably formed integrally therewith and is used to secure the flap in closed position.

I11 the form of my invention shown in Fig. 1, the part A of the envelope is provided with two parallel slits a and a, which are disposed transversely of the tongue b, forming a fastening-band A between them, and are so located that when the flap B is folded down the slits a a will be adjacent to the point where the tongue I) joins the flap and in line with the tongue. The tongue I) is passed through the two slits a CL-I beneath the fastening-band A, as shown, and is then folded backward upon itself, the free end being secured in placeby passing it through one or two slitsb b in the flap B, (two slits being shown,) forming'a tongue-retaining band B between them in the manner illustrated in the drawings. It udll be seen that by folding the tongue Z) sharply as it emerges from the slit ct that a very secure fastening for the flap is provided, and by securing the free end of the tongue the fastening cannot become accidentally loosened.

In Figs. 3 and 4: I have shown a slight modification of the arrangement for securing the loose end of the tongue. In these figures 0 represents the back of the envelope, D the flap, and d the tongue. I form the slits o c in the part 0 slightly farther apart than in Fig. 1, although this is not essential, and between the two I form an auxiliary slit 0 in the fastening'band G. The tongue is passed into slit 0, out at c beneath the fastening-band, and then bent sharply upward and the end of the tongue secured by passing it into slit 0 and out at c, as shown. In this form no slits are made in the flap and the tongue-retaining band is formed as a part of the fastening-band G. Imay also, to further secure the tongue against accidental displacement, give it a sharp fold upon itself after it passes through its retaining-slit, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4 in dotted lines.

\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is

1. An envelope having its back provided with parallel slits forming a fastening band and a tongue securing band, and a tongue of a length to permit of its being passed under the fastening band and then folded upon the fastening band and passed beneath the tongue securing band, substantially as described.

2. An envelope having its back provided with parallel slits forming a fastening band, and a slit in said band forming between it and one edge of the band a securing band for the tongue, said envelope having also a tongue of a length to pass beneath the whole of the fastening band, be folded upon it and passed beneath the tongue securing band, substantially as described.
