SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,788,'dated December 22, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, GEORGE W. TRAUGER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lambertvillain the county of l-Iunten don andState of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelopes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to envelopes; and it oonsistsin providing an ordinary folded envelope, after the manufacture of the same is completed, with means for opening the same, which consists of a metallic wire of greater length than the side of the envelope, which wire has its central portion located within the envelope and the ends bent at substantial right angles with the body portion of the wire, so as to lie over the ends of the envelope, the ends of the wire being passed through the edge of the fold of the envelope, so as to lie within the same. This construction provides a cheap and convenient means whereby the envelope may be opened without unduly mutilating the sa1ne,s1na1l loops of wire only being accessible and visible at the upper and lower side corners of the envelope.

In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are views of an envelope, showing my improvement applied thereto.

A refers to the envelope, which is of ordipreferably the right-hand one, is located within the same the body portions of a wire 3, which is cut to be of .greater length than the width ofthe envelope. his wire is quite fine and flexible, and the ends thereof are bent over the outer edges of the envelope and inwardly, so as to pass through the envelope and lie within the same to leave a very small portion or loop exposed, which can be readily grasped, and when pulled or drawn upon will sever the paper at the fold, so as to open the end of the envelope. The ends of the wires, being protected or located entirely within the and lower edges of the envelope by small pieces of paper pasted at the corners, as shown in Patent No. 279,543, dated June 19,1883. 1 am also aware that in English Patent No.

2,274 of 1864 it is proposed to stitch an envelope with wire, and my invention is distin guished from the same, as in no sense of the.

Word is the wire I employ held in place by stitching.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is

1. The combination, in an envelope of ordinary construction, having a covering-flap, of an opening-wire D, the major portion of which is located within the envelope, so as to lie within the end fold thereof adjacent to the bend in the paper, the terminal portions of the opening-wire being passed outside of the envelope through the bend in the paper and then within the envelope, so as to provide the exposed or grasping portions, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with an envelope, of a thin and flexible'wire B, located in one end of the envelope and having its main or central portion entirely within the same, theend portions of said wire being passed through the edge of the envelope and into the same, so as to provide exposed grasping portions, the ends being so located that they will lie between the folds of the envelope and the body portion of the opening-wire, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
