ENVELOPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,799, dated October 2, 1894:.
Application filed May 3, 1894. Serial N0- 9i (N0 model-l To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM BARNARD, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, resid- 1ng at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelopes, of which the following is aspecification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain improvements in that class of envelopes employed for the mailing of circulars, books, seeds, catalogues and other second class matter, and its ob ect is to provide an envelope which will securely retain its contents and, at the same time, permit ready examination by the postal clerks and the opening and closing of the same whenever necessary.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an envelope made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similarview showing the blank from which the envelope is made. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the envelope, and Fig. 4 is a similar sectional view illustrating a slight modification of the invention.
Referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings, A represents the main or body portion of the envelope which forms in the finished article the face portion, on which the address may be written. Its outlines are indicated by the dotted lines a, a. From one end of the body portion extends the back and flap piece B equal in size to the body portion. On each side of the body portion are narrow flaps 19,12 which are folded over and pasted down on top of the back piece B and hold the latter for, say two-thirds of its length. Beyond the ends of the flaps b, b are two wings D, D which are bent over and pasted one to the other to form practically a continuation of the back portion of the envelope; although the main back portion B is free beyond the ends of the flaps b, b as seen in Fig. 1.
At the head of the envelope is a strip E extending for the full Width of the same and adapted to be bent over on the dotted line and be confined in place by the pasted flaps e, 6 so as to form a pocket at the head of the envelope for the reception of the free end of the back piece B. This feature is shown more clearly in Fig. 3 in which the parts are somewhat exaggerated for the purpose of clearer illustration.
In Fig. 4 the envelope is shown as made with an auxiliary flap or back piece B, while the main back piece is confined for its full length by the small side flaps which extend for nearly the full length of the envelope. This latter construction is more secure in some respects than that shown in Figs. 1 to 3 and is made in two pieces enabling the cutting of the paper to better advantage andbeing for that reason somewhat less expenslve.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An envelope comprising a main or body portion A, a back piece 13 secured at its opposite sides for a portion only of its length to the main or body portion and terminating 1n a loose end flap, a pocket at one end of the envelope adapted to receive the end flap, and portions D extending between the mouth of the pocket and the securing points of the back piece, substantially as described.
2. A blank for the manufacture of an envelope comprising a main or body portion A, a back piece B, flaps b, b, wings D. D and end piece E and confining flaps e, e for said end piece, substantially as described.
