TAB FOR NEGKBANDS FOR SHIRTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1914.
Application led July 17, 1914. Serial No. 851,441.
T o all 'whom it may con cern.'
Be it known that I, WALTER M. STEP- PACHER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Tab for Neckbands of Shirt, of which the following is a specilication.
lMy invention consists of the provision on the neck band of a shirt of a tab of the construction herein claimed whose object is to facilitate the opening of the pocket in said band ordinarily closed in starching or laundrying, whereby a stud may be inserted conveniently inthe hole in the outer fold containing the same. y
The vinvention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied as long as they are within the scope of the claims.
Figure 1 represents a rear elevation of a neck band of a shirt embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 represents a similar vertical section thereof on an enlarged scale, but showing certain members in a different position from those in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents an elevation of a portion of the neck band showing the primary formation of the tab above referred to. Fig. 5 represents a similar elevation showing the successive steps of forming said tab.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the neck band of a shirt which excepting the feature of my invention applied thereto is of usual construction. Connected with the outer fold of said band at the center of the back thereof is the tab 2 which depends therefrom and overhangs the adjacent portion of the shirt below said band where it is accessible so that it may be readily graspedV by the thumb and forefinger and drawn outwardly or rearwardly so that said fold may be separated from the inner fold, thus opening what is known as the pocket between the two folds whereby a buttoning stud may be inserted in the opening or hole 3 of the band, access to which being rendered convenient by such opening of the pocket, it being well known that in the laundnving of the band, the folds thereof adhere due to the starching, and it is diiiicult to separate the same as a thumb or finger cannot be introduced between them. and a knife or other implement if employed, is liable to cutthe fabric, but here the tab 9. performs an important function in that it is free and within reach, and may be subjected to an outward pull which then is imparted to the exterior fold of the band, thus destroying the holding power of the starch or breaking the connection of the two folds when said exterior fold separates from the inner fold,
and the hole 3 is uncovered from Within for the application and insertion of the stud for the connection of the collar. as usual.
In the manufacture of the tab, l cut one of the plies 4 of the band along the lines 5 forming the quadrilateral piece 6 which is turned down on the bend 7 below the band. Then said piece is folded inwardlv on the diagonal cross lines 8. 8, converting the same into the triangular shape which comprises the tab 2, the latter then being stitched to the adjacent plies of the band. the result being as in Fig. 1, said tab thus being formed of several thicknesses of the same material as the ply 4, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and so possessing great strength, it being removed from the main portions of the band, thus avoiding increa sin g the thickness thereof especially about the bnttonhole 3.
Having thus described mv invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. In a pocket for a neck band of a shirt, a ply of said band having an integral piece thereof partly separated therefrom and turned down therefrom, and a. tab formed of the lower portion of said piece folded on ggg 1,122,327
3. In a shirt, a neck band provided at the into triangular form, and secured to the edback thereof with a tab adapted to facilijacent portions of the band.
tate the opening of the pocket Within the WALTER M. STEPPACHER. inner and outer folds, the same being com- Witnesses: v 5 posed of a, quadrilateral piece of the mate- WILFRED H. BALDWIN,
rial of one of the /ples of smid band folded L. B. WEIL.
