To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES'LAYDEN, a citizen 'oit' the United States, residing Brooklyn, in the county of IIin-g-s and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shirt and Neckband Constructions, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the class of apparel and'more particularly to shirt and neck band construction and is particularly designed for use in connection with my invention of collar holder shown in my copending application Serial Number 469514. filed May 14:, 1921, and the application of collarshown in my co-pending application Serial No. 469515, filed May 14, 1921.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a neck band construction which will operate when the neck band is closed to prevent the formation of a bulge or obstruction at the joint between the ends oi the band, the arrangement presenting a smooth or flat inner surface capable of adapting itself to the neck of the wearer with resulting comfort.

i Another object of the invention is to provide a shirt and neck band construction which will eliminate the necessity of radially projecting collar retaining" buttons.

Another object of the invention is to provide a shirt and neck band construction in which the vertical edges of the shirt are joined-to'the neck band in a manner which :will allow the edges-of the shirt to overlap at theiront or across atsuch point. while holding the edges of the neck band flush with each other at the joint both as regards the inside surface of the neck band and the outside surface or circumference of the neck band.

sists in the improved construction and novel arrangements of parts which will hereinafter be fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In carrying the invention into practice,

along the longitudinal line Band the folds of the neck hand then stitched together at B andat E the latter arranged with its stitching broken at B so as to form a 1 pocket at the back of the neckband and upon the external surface thereof, the same adapted for the reception of a collar fastening (not shown), When the neck band tongues 18-18 material is joined. to the shirt as shown in Figure 3, the band is uniformly defined by two folds but when arranged as shown in Figure 4, it presents four folds inwardly of the vertical edges of the open side of the shirt and two folds at the immediate ends of the neck band and also in proximity to the vertical edges of the shirt at the open side thereof. This produces flaps F and G at the ends of the neck band which are adapted to overlap one another when the neck band is closed and thereby ive the neck band a uniform four ply or four fold construction throughout its circumference, eliminating the formation of any bulk any point in the circumference ofthe neck band both inside and outside thereof. llhe construction also permits the edge 15 of the shirt to overlie the edge and to extend across the cutaway portion 13 when said neck band is closed. By cutting the shirt as shown and described at 13 and associating this construction with the flaps F and G- an extremely neat and tidy appearance is given to the shirt at the point of connec tion of the aforesaid neck band.

By forming the neck band as described, it will be observed that the ends of the band are open so as to accommodate the ends of a holding device 16, the same having adapted to be passed through vertical slots 1919 formed in said neck hand. These tongues are adapted to be connected in slots formed in the ends of the collar as shown and described in my aforesaid co-pending application for collar executed as of even date with this application.

While I have specifically referred to one desired manner of cutting my neckband, l of course do not wish to be limited in this respect. I am particularly desirous of emphasizing the construction of a neck band which consists of a number of foldsat its immediate ends so that when the ends are brought together the combined number of folds in said ends will be equal to the folds in any other part of the neck hand throughout the circumference thereof.

What is claimed as new is 1. A neck band formed with a multiplicity of folds, the folds at the ends of the band 1 saw/44 being less in number than the folds in the body of the band and formed so that the ends may be overlapped whereby the combined number of folds in said ends will be equal to the number of folds in the body of said band, the said neck band having vertical slots therein arranged in parallel relation to the vertical edges of the ends of the band.

2. A neck band provided with overlapping free ends formed so that the joint between the ends lies flush respectively with the inside and outside surfaces of the band when the latter is closed;
