Specification of Ie'tters Patent. Application and April 15, 1912. .Serial No. 690,768.
To all whom it may concern r a Be it known that I, AXEL- H. HAWKANSON, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar- Fastenings, of which the following is a speci; fication.
This invention relates'to connecting means by which collars are secured in a separable manner to the neck band of shirts, and has for itsobject to provide a simple and efficient structural formation of the connecting means, whereby great lateral compactness is attained, and the usual tendency to dig into the neck of the wearer in actual use avoided, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is an end elevation of a collar hook embodying the present invention. Fig. 2, is a front elevation of the same. Fig, 3, is a perspective view of the same. Figs. 4, 5 and 6, are end elevations of modifications.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the main body portion of the device, formed of plate metal and preferablyof the oblong rectangular form shown.
2 is a lateral-web or flange integrally connected to the top of the main body portion '1 and preferably in right-angle relation thereto, as shown... Said web or flange 2 is located centrally the mid-length of the main plate 1, and has a length approximating the length of the button holes of the shirt band and collar and adapted to occupythe same as hereinafter described. r
3 is a looking or holding web or flange formed integrally on the free edge of the lateral web or neck 2, and preferably in right-angle relation thereto as shown. In the present improvement said web or flange 3 has a free end extension or tongue 4, which projects longitudinally. a distance beyond one end of the lateral web or neck 2 as shown. In the present improvement the combined length of the web 3 and its end extension 4, is approximately equal to the length of the lateral web 2, aforesaid, so that the said web 3 and tongue 4 can be readily passed in a lateral manner through the button eration of the appliance. And a material part of the present improvement involves holes of the shirt band and collar, as hereinafter more fully set forth in the opthe disposal of the web 3 and tongue 4., as a whole, in a ldngitudinally offset manner with relation to .the web 2 carrying said parts, and for the purpose stated in the operation of the appliance.
5 is a hook, integrally formed on the upper edge of the web 3, with the free arm of said hook disposed to the rear of said web to constitute a retaining means for a necktie when the appliance is used in connection ance is used in connection with turn down collars, the aforesaid necktie retaining hook 5, will be omitted as unnecessary, and as illustrated more particularly in Fig. 5.
It is within the scope of the present invention to dispose the web 3 and its tongue 4 in a downturned direction, as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 6, and as distinguished from the upturned direction ofsaid parts shown in Figs. -1, 2, 3 and 5 as the preferred form of the present invention. It is also within the scope of the present invention to dispose the lateral web 2 and its accessories, upon Patented Mar. 11,1913.
I with stand up collars. .When' the applithe main body 1, a short distance, below the top edge of said main body, as shown in Fig. 6, when a supplementary bearing is desired above the web 2 and its accessories aforesaid.
The mode of using, and operation of the appliance is as follows :The user first .passes the hook 5, Web 3 and tongue 4,
as a whole, laterally through the button hole of the shirt band and through the adj acent button hole of the collar, after which the appliance is shifted longitudinally of said button holes, with thetongue 4 overlapping the end margin of the collar button hole. \Vhen the parts are moved sufficiently to bring the lateral web 2, into alinement with the button holes the said web 2 is pushed therein, with the main body portion 1 1 resting against the face of the shirt band and with the tongue 4 in holding engage-- ment with an end margin of the button hole of the shirt collar. This completes the fastening operation without any turning movement of the parts and consequent wear and tear upon the margins of the button An unfastening operation of the holes. parts is effected by a manipulation just the reverse of that above described.
.Hayingthus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A plate metal collar fastening comprising,
i-os
a flatelongated main body having atits upper end a lateral flange of less length than said main body, and a holding flange terminating at one end intermediate of the lateral flange in right angle relation thereto and having a free end or tongue extending to one side of the lateral flange, the holding flange and its tongue having a combined length approximately equal to the length of the lateral flan e aforesaid.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 13th day of April 1912.
