COLLAR-FASTENER.
imanes.,
application filed May 1,
Taunton, in the county'of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Fas-v teners; and do herebyA declare the following to be a full, clear-and exact description of the inventionx such as will enable others skilled 'in the'art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The Iinvention relates to improvements in l collar fasteners.
The object of the present invention is to improve the constructionof collar fasteners and to provide a simple, practical and inexpensive construction designed to be applied to an ordinary shirt at the back thereof and adapted to dispense with the usual col-y lar button and enable a necktie to slide freely through the collar.
A further object of the invention is to provide a collar fastener of this character which when desired may be arranged out i of the way to enable the ordinary collar button to be used for fastening a collar to the shirt at lthe back thereof.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novelcombination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing Figure l is a rear elevation of a portion of a shirt provided with a collar fastener constructed in accordance with this invention,` and shown in engagement with a portion of a collar7 TEig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4: are detail views of lthe members of the clasp.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in thejseveral figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, l designates atab of substantially oblong form provided with a tapered lower.
or outer end 2 and secured at its other end to the neck band 3 at the upper portion of the button hole e to enable 1t to be passed Specification of Letters Patent.

through the same and pushed into the neck band wheni it is not desiredl to use the tab.' The button-hole 4 is -formed in the loose outer ply' orportion of the neck band and when the tab'zis pushed into the button vhole the latter is free for use and the tab hangs down in rear of the said loose ply or portion and is out of the way. This will enable an. ordinary collar button to be used when desired. The button hole 4 is formed in an outer ply or portion 5 of 'the neck band, the inner ply or portion G of the neck band of the shirt being designed to be interposed between the neck of the We'arer and a collar button when the same is used. The tab which is adapted to be passed through the button hole 7 of a collar 8 is provided at ity outer portion with the. female member 9 of a 'clasp composed of the said female member and a male member; 10. The female member comprises a lt 'relatively` large circular plate secured relatively near and concentric with the rounded end 2 of the tab l and has a central open- .ing l1` and provided thereat with a substantially annular wall 12 from which extends an inwardly projecting resilient annular flange. The inwardly projecting annular flange which is spaced from the outwardly projecting wall or iiange 12 is split at intervals at '14 to enable it to expand and contract and engage the male member which consists of aplate or flange and a head 15 of circular form connected with the plate or flange by a neck portion 16. The clasp is shown on an enlarged scale in Fig. 2 of the drawing but in practice the male and female members will be constructed of thin sheet metal and will be made exceedingly fiat so as not to ("use any material bulging of the parts.
The base plates or attaching portions of the male and female members of the clasp may be secured to the tab and to the shirt by any suitable means such as stitching or the like and suitable perforations l? and 18 are preferably provided for this purpose.
It will be seen that the device is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is adapted to be readily applied to a shirt without necessitating any alteration in the construction thereof and that itis adapted to dispense with the ordinary collar button and enable afnecktie to slide freely `tlrrough a collar without lfipling-erY catching at the back as is the case when an ordinary collar button is employed. Also it will be ,clear that the tab may be pushed into the neck band out of the way should it be desired at any time to use an ordinary collar button and as it is attached tothe upper portion of the button hole it will not in any way interfere with such use. It is further evident that the positioning of the circular plate of the female member in relation to the rounded end of theI tab, will provide a stiffener for the .Lab and a means for facilitating the insertion of the tab through the bottom holes of the collar and collar band'.
lVhat is claimed is The combination with a shirt having a neck band with a loose outer ply opened at the bottom'and provided with a 'button hole, of a collar fastener including a tab secured at its, upper end .to the neck band at the topV of the button vrhole at the inner face of the loose outer ply and carried by the latter and adapted to be arranged between said loose outer ply and the neck band and to hang down out of the way in rear copies of this patent may be' obtained for of the free lower edge of said outer ply portion7 said tab being also adapted to be passed through the button hole of the loose outer ply and the button hole of the collar, the free end of said tab being rounded, a fastener for securing the free end of the tab to the shirt below the neck band, said fastener comprising a male member having a head secured to said shirt below said neck band7 and a female member having a socket and a fiat relatively large circular flange secured relatively near and concentric with said rounded end of said tab, whereby the flange of said female member acts as a stiffener and a means for inserting said tab through the button hole of the collar and said loose ply.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
