Description

UNITED STATES LAURA M. BRONISON,
on NEW YORK, N. Y.
FASTENING FOR STUDS OR BUTTONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,46 l, dated August 1l, 1863 antedated December 31, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURA M. BRoNsoN, of the city, county, and State of' N ew York, have invented a new and useful improvement in f'astenings for buttons on coats, vests, pants, and other garments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference -being had to the accompanying drawings,
making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top View of myimproved fastener. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of same. Fig. 3 is a view showin g button and fabric. Fig. 4 is an S-shaped Wire with counter-eye on crossbar.
The fastenin gs used for the purposes abovementioned prior to my said invention consisted of acircular spiral ring, which, on being turned into the eye of the button, affordedno stay to the cloth, while any strain upon thev button caused the whole ring to project toward the body or limb of the person, and the single point embraced by the button-eye to be drawn into the eyelet, so-as to rend or greatly strain it. The wire loop sometimes used for the purpose was open to similar objections, While the more recent invention of the button with a screw of metal and gutta-percha nut cannot possibly give any stay to the cloth or effect a permanent fastening, since the continued friction in Wearing will tend to unscrew the xture, and the sharp edge of the screw-thread will soon Wear the nut so as to make it inoperative.
Buttons attached by the ordinary method of sewing-cord cannot, of' course, be readily removed and reattached Without much inconvenience-to men especially who are occupied at sea or in camp.
By my invention the above-mentioned dif'- sists in making such fastenings ofl a metal ring or S-shaped wire, With a portion so arranged as to form a crossbar to the other portion, the part so formed being bent in the middle so as to form a counter eye or rest for the button-eye, so that it may remain fixed in place, and not Work or slide upon the bar.
In attaching the buttons in place on any garment, an eyelet is made with a bodkin,or any pointedinstrument, the eye ofthe button is forced through, and the ring or Sshaped wire turned into the eye until the eye of' the button slips into the eye ofthe fastener. Now, when any strain is exerted upon -the button, the entire size ot' the ring .or S is drawn against the cloth, and thus affords a thorough and efficient stay thereto, so that any extra staying by cloth, or even working of the eyelet, is rendered unnecessary.
The advantage obtained by my said invention consisls in the facility it affords for attachment, detachment, and reattachment of the buttons, together with the neat and compact form they can be made to assume when in place, and also the protection thus afforded to the fabric, securing and staying it against all the strain to which buttons are liable.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The ring or S-shaped Wire of' metal with the cross-bar and countereye, as shown, and for the purposes set forth.
