To all whom, it may concern: A

Be it known that I, GEORGE F. MURDOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wellsville, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Placket-Fastener for Skirts, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in.

placket-fasteners for skirts; and the object in view is to. provide a simple and inexpensive construction which may be easily applied to a skirt to hold the placket securely closed and which will itself be concealed from view by the skirt and the waistband thereof.

In my improved fastener the waistband is attached to a fastener member which is coupled detachably to the members that serve to confine the placket, and this waistband member of the fastener is provided with means for engaging the waist-belt in order to hold the latter in proper position over the waistband. The members of the placket-fastener are peculiarly constructed and arranged to secure overlapping thereof and enable them to be readily connected and disconnected, and the placket-fastener itself is made of resilient spring metal for the'purpose of yielding or giving to conform to the curvature of the'skirt when the wearer is seated.

The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings,forming a part of this speci- Iication, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a skirt with my placket-fastener applied thereto and showing the placket partially opened.`

Fig. 2 is .a vertical section through the skirt, the waistband thereof, and the fastener, the placket being closed and the ends of the waistband united by the fastener. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the placket-fastener. Fig. 4 is a like view of the fastenermember which engages with the waistband and is connected with the placket-fastener. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on theline 5 5 of Fig. 1 on a plane through the placket-fastener-and a portion of the dress-placket.

Like numerals of reference denote like and corresponding parts in each of the several Iigures of the drawings.

The skirt 10 has the usual waistband 11 and the placket 12. With the placket and waistband of the skirt I have combined a fastener which serves to hold the placket securely closed and confines the waistband in an overlapped condition for the purpose of aiding the placket in concealing the fastener. This fastener consists of three members 13, 14, and 15, which are designed to be connected detachably together. The members 13 and 14 are flat resilient strips of steel, and they are pivoted together at one end by a rivet, eyelet, or pin 16. The members 13 14 are fitted and secured in facings 17, secured to the respective edges of the placket 12, and these pivoted members are arranged to open and close with 'the edges of the placket to which they are fastened. The member 14 is a straight length or strip of metal, and it is secured to the outer or overlapping edge of the placket. The other member, 13, of the fastener is curved ed gewise, so as to be deflected -from a straight line, and this curved member is secured to the underlying portion of the placket for the purpose of being overlapped by the member 14 and the outer edge of the placket, whereby the curved member carries a portion ofthe placket to which it is united inwardly beyond the line` of that portion of the placket which is attached to the fastener member 14. The overlapped portion of the placket is thus prevented from gapping open and exposing the undergarments even when the wearer is in a sitting posture. The members 13 14, which are attached to the placket, are detachably connected together when closed by means of a suitable coupling, and in one form of this coupling a headed stud 18 is secured to the upper end of the fastener member 13, while the corresponding end of the other fastener member, 14, is formed with a curved arm 19, which is extended laterally to one side of the straight portion of the member 14 and is formed with a keyhole-slot 20, adapted to receive the headed stud 18. By forming the member 14 with a laterally-extended arm it may be conveniently projected beyond the facing of the placket, and the operator can readily grasp the protruding arm for the purpose of manipulating the fastener' in coupling or detaching the arm 19 to or from the headed stud 18. The other member, 15, of the fastener is in the form of a plate, preferably struck up from sheet metal, and at its lower end this plate is provided with a keyhole-slot 21, while its upper end is bent or curved to form the hook 22. This fastener member 15 is provided at a point intermediate between the slot 21 and the hook 22 thereof with a headed stud 23, and said member is furthermore bent somewhat at a point intermediate of its length, as at 24. The member 15 is adapted to be passed through a slot or hole 25 which is formed in that part of the skirt to which the fastener member 13 is attached, and the slotted end 21 of the member 15 is thus adapted to overlap the upper end of the placket fastener member 13, whereby the stud 18 on said fas tener member 13 may be interlocked with the stud 18, and this stud thus serves to confine the fastener members 14 15 in locked relation to the member 13.

The waistband 11 of the skirt is provided with buttonholes 2G, and the member 15 of the fastener has its stud 23 fitted in one buttonhole and in the slot 25, whereby the stud serves to confine the member 15 on the waistband. The buttonhole in the other end of the waistband may be engaged by the stud 23 on the fastener member 15, and thus the waistband may be connected detachably to the fastener member 15, while the placket is held securely closed by the fastener members 13 14. The waistband may be easily buttoned to or unbuttoned from the member 15, and the placket-fastener may readily be operated to open the placket o1' to confine the same securely in a closed position.

The fastener is entirely concealed when the placket is closed,and the device is simple and durable in construction, easily operated and applied to a garment, and it is cheap of manu facture.

The hook 22 of the fastener member may be engaged with a waist-belt for the purpose of holding the same in proper position or with the waistband of the dress.

Changes may be made in the form and proportion of some of the parts, while their essential features are retained and the spirit of the invention embodied. Hence I do not desire to be limited to the precise form of all the parts as shown, reserving the right to vary therefrom.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. A placket and waistband fastener for skirts consisting of a member, 13, curved edgewise to lie out of a straight line, a straight member, 14, pivoted at one end to said member, 13, another member, 15, having a headed stud at a point intermediate of its length, and coupling formations on the contiguous ends of the three members, substantially as described.

2. Aplacket and waistband fastener consisting of a curved member, 13, provided at one end with a headed stud, a straight member, 14, pivoted to the member, 13, and having an oistanding arm at its free end-slotted for thel reception of said stud, and another member, 15, slotted at one end, provided with a hook at its opposite end and with a headed stud at a point between the head and slot, substantially as described.
