Description

(N0 Mddel.) A. BEAULAND. NEGKTIE EASTBNBR.
No. 407,508. I Patented July 23, I889.
WITNESSES INVENTOH N PETERS. PhOiO-Lflllognpher. Wanhillginn, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMAND BEAULAND, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
N EC KTl E- FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,508, dated July 23, 1889.
Application filed March 22, 1889. Serial No. 304,274. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMAND BEAULAND, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Necktie-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvementin necktie-fasteners, and has for its object to provide a device of simple, economical, and effective construction and capable of ready adjustment to the back of a scarf, whereby the said scarf may be expeditiously and conveniently suspended from the collar-button of a shirt and the said scarf be held in proper position upon the shirt-bosom without the aid of the neckband.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a rear view of a scarf illustrating the application of my device. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the device detached. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the device. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the spring removed from the body of the device.
In carrying out the invention the body of the device consists of a plate 10, preferably made from thin metal, which plate may be of any desired contour, and is provided at or near its center with a key-hole slot or opening 11. Upon the back of the plate a spring 12 is rigidly secured by passing a rivet or equivalent device through one end-for instance, the lower end, as shown in Fig. 2 which extremity of the spring is rigidly held in contact with the plate. The spring 12 is made to substantially conform to the contour of the opening 11, and is ordinarily constructed of a single piece open at the top, as illustrated at 13 in Fig. 4.
The reduced portion of the key-hole slot is uppermost when the device is attached to the scarf, and the opening in the spring is made at the reduced end thereof. The spring is so attached to the body of the device that the enlarged portion will surround the enlarged port-ion of the key-hole opening and the smaller portion of the spring the smaller portion of the said opening, as best illustrated in Fig. 2. \Vhen the said spring 12 is attached to the body and viewed from the front, the reduced or upper portion of the spring will be plainly visible, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
In constructing the preferred form of spring (shown in Fig. 4:) it is made of a single piece of metal, as aforesaid. The spring metal from which it is made is bent upon itself to form what for convenience I denominate a bodyoval A and an upper shank-oval A. I denominate the upper oval of the spring a shank-oval, inasmuch as it is adapted to receive the shank of the collar-button.
The plate 10 is provided on the same side as the spring with upper and lower attachinghooks 17 at opposite sides of the slot, the points of the hooks projecting toward each other.
In operation the larger portion of the keyhole opening, and likewise the lower oval A of the spring, being made large enough to conveniently receive the head of the collar-button, the head is inserted in the said opening and lower oval in contact with the scarf, whereupon the scarf is pulled downward and the shank of the said collar-button is made to pass from the larger oval A of the spring into the smaller oval portion A. When the shank passes up into this smaller oval, the members of the spring constituting such oval clamp or bind against the shank of the but-.
ton, which shank also contacts with the upper wall of the reduced portion of the keyhole slot.
To remove the scarf, it is pushed upward, and when the button-shank enters the larger oval A of the spring the scarf is carried outward from the shirt and quickly and expeditiously detached from connection with the button.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a necktie-fastener consisting in an attachingplate 10, having, a key-hole slot 11, an open spring 12, bent to the form of the figure 8 and 10 secured to the said plate, the upper oval be- ERNEST SANBANERE, J EAN-MARIE CAZES.
