PATENT OFFICE.
CORA R. JACKSON, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
UNDERGARMENT FOR INFANTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 27, 1907.
Application filed November 15, 1906. Serial N0. 343,511.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Conn R. JAcKsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Undergarments for Infants, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in under-garments for infants.
Experience has demonstrated the fact that the central and lower abdominal region of infants are extremely sensitive to cold, and while the other parts of the body may preferably be covered with a garment of thin, light material, the central and lower abdominal regions should for hygienic reasons be covered with a much thicker and warmer fabric.
To accomplish this object I have provided a garment which is formed of two different kinds of fabric, the main body portion of which is made of an ordinary thin, light material, usually of cotton, while that portion of the garment which covers the abdomen is preferably formed of wool, silk or other similar material of heavier or thicker quality and which is better adapted to shield the more sensitive portion of the bodyfrom the injurious effects of cold.
A further object of my invention is to so connect the suspender straps or tapes with the garment that the weight of the fabric suspended therefrom will be brought to bear upon the back of the shoulders of the child, whereby the tendency of such weight to draw the back or neck band of the garment against the neck of the child is prevented and the liability of chafing the neck of the child caused by the forward pull upon the garment, as heretofore constructed, is avoided, while the suspender strap or tape serves an additional function to strengthen the connection between the light and heavy fabrics whereby the liability of their becoming separated where they are stitched together, is avoided.
The construction of my invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a front View, and Fig. 2 a rear view thereof.
Like parts are identified by the same reference letters in both views.
A represents the front part of the garment which I comprises all that portion below the series of stitches B which is made of thick, heavy material, preferably wool or silk, and which is adapted to cover up and protect the abdominal regions of the body. All the other portions of the garment including the front portion C above the line of stitches B, the arms D, D, and the back of the garment E are made of light, thin material, preferably of cotton and such parts are secured together by said series of stitches B and the vertical series of stitches F or'in any other convenient manner.
G, G represents the suspender straps which are preferably made of inelastic material. ed at their upper ends to the shoulders at the rear portion of the garment and extend downwardly and outwardly as shown and indicated in the drawings beneath the arms of the garment when their lower ends are turned inwardly and converge at a central point beneath the center of the front portion of the garment as shown in Fig. l.
The garmentmay be knitted with the front connected together, if desired, but the same is preferably made open in front and provided with a series of buttons H, H on one side of the central opening and a series of buttonholes I, I, registering therewith upon the opposite side of the garment.
When the front of the garment is closed, the lower converging ends of the suspender straps or tapes G are brought together so as to overlap each other, as indicated in Fig. 1, and may be connected together by a pin, or in any other convenient manner and may be used for supporting or suspending the weight of other fabrics connected therewith.
It will be obvious that by this construction the weight brought to bear upon the suspenders instead of pulling forwardly upon the front portion of the garment as heretofore constructed will have a tendency to draw the back upper portion of the garment rearwardly and away from the neck of the child, whereby the liability of the neck of the child becoming chafed or the garment being pulled out of its proper normal position is avoided and the weight suspended from the tapes is uniformly and properly distributed. While the fact that-said straps or suspenders are connected with both the thick and thin portions of the fabric above and below the series of stitches B, such portions of the fabric are more firmly connected together and the liability of their becoming torn apart or separted is, as previously stated, avoided.
It will be obvious that the lower front portions of the garment may be made of the desired greater thickness than the upper or thinner portions either in the Weaving or knitting in any suitable manner.
Having thus described my inventionwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new manufacture an undergarment for infants of the class described formed of two different fabrics of two different thicknesses, all that part of the garment except the lower front portion being formed of a thin light fabric and the front lower portion being formed of a comparatively thicker, heavier and warmer fabric, a pair of suspender straps secured to said garment above and across the connections of said fabrics, said straps being adapted to strengthen and reinforce the connections at the junction of said fabrics while they perform the usual additional function of suspender straps.
2. In an under-garment of the class described the com bination with th main nor-tion thereof, of a pair They are c'onnectof suspender straps respegtively connected at, their ugper ends to the iipper'loack 'portioirbf theshoulder f'the garment extending from thence downwardly benltlith'e' arms of the garment and converging fron thence' for wardly and downwardly to the lower central portion of the garment, whereby the weight suspended from their lower converging ends of the Suspender straps is brought to bear upon and is carried by the rear portion of the garment, and whereby the :hack portion of the garment isdrawn awayv from andlprevented when worn from chafing 10 the hack of the neck 'of the wearer, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
Intestimony/whereof} qfiixyrny signature in the presence of two witnesses.
