BIFURCATED GARMENT.

Be it known that I, Fnnn B. 'HAMBLIN,

citizen of the United States of America, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Bifurcated Garments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to bifurcated garments and pertains particularly to, that class of clothing known as union suits made of flat or woven fabrics sometimes called loose fitting union suits. In this type of garment it is of the utmost importance that the garment should be so constructed that it will instantly adapt itself to any position in which the body is bent or held and that this be accomplished without undue strain upon any portion of the garment. Also that the crotch should be normally closed'and form fitting to insure comfort and for sanitary reasons.

My invention has to do primarily with provision of a garment of simple and comfortable construction wherein the crotch structure is provided with form-fitting interlocking gore extensions. These gore extensions are so designed and fitted that they form a permanent part of the'crotch construction and Wlll always remain normally closed by reason of this design and without the use of buttons or other auxiliary means.

Afurther feature of my invention consists in the provision of a means for adjusting the waist band. I have also preferably connected the gore extensions of the crotch structure to the rear center seam, to the waist-band or belt and to the front at the crotch. Thus, I have provided a means for adj usting the waist-band in such a way that this adjustment will adapt the original garment to different sized figures and will permitof adequate adjustment to compensate for shrinkage. 1 v

Likewise, I have provided a buttonless inter-locking crotch structure by attaching curved and form-fitting gore extension to the center or crotch seam of the garment, to the belt and to the front of the garment at the crotch. There results an overlapping and inter-locking structure 'of'such utility that it may be readily applied to the design ing of separate drawers, to union suits or to one-piece sleeping garments.

Another feature of my invention has to do with provision of a one-piece garment wherein the front of the body portion of the garment is permanently connected to the waist-band and the back portion of said body portion is entirely free from such waist-band. Thus, I have provided a garment that will permit of the wearer bending over without any strain on the trousers or crotch portion of the garment or upon the body portion of the garment. Since my garment is provided with two form-fitting overlappedand interlocking gores attached to a wasit-band, which is adjustable at the sides of the garment, it will be further evident that I have provided an automatic in tcrlocking crotch structure always comfortably fitting and normally closed irrespective of any position of the body.

Many other features of my invention will be apparent as this description progresses and will be brought out by the claims appended thereto. The various objects of my invention are preferably attained by the des gn lllustrated in the drawings wherein s milar characters of reference designate correspoding parts and wherein Figure l is a'front View of a union suit embodying my invention.

In the drawings, my combination garment is shown as comprising a trousers portion 1, provided with legs 2 and 3 and having a split center seam 4i. A. curved form-fitting extension. or gore 5 is connected to one edge of this center seam 4, as best shown in Fig ure 3. This gore is not only curved and designed to be form-fitting but it is preferably made comparatively wide at its top edge 6 and narrowed down at its lower upturned edge 7. The wide upper edge 6 is permanently connected to the waistband 8, and the narrow upturned end 7 is connected to the front of the garment at the crotch 3, as best shown in Figures 1 and 2.

A. second or outside gore 9, similar in shape to the gore 5 but reversibly attached, is connected at its inner edge to the other edge of the split seam 4t. Tts upper edge 10 is also connected to the waist-band 8 and its narrow end 11 is connected to the outside of the front of the garment at the crotch 2.

Thus, it will be apparent that I have ,pro vided a form-fitting interlocking crotch structure that will normally remain closed. This is insured by the permanent overlap of the upper ends 6 and 10 of the gores 5 and 9 to the form-fitting design of the overlap ping and interlocking gores tiiemselves, and to the front connections of the overlapped upper ends 7 and 11 or the gores being attached to the front at the crotch on their respective sides and attached center seams t.

The waist band 8, to which is permanently attached the overlapping and interlocking gore ends 6 and 10, is preferably graduated in width toward the garment back, as best shown in Figure 6. Laces 12 and 13 are preferably stitched in parallel rows at each side of this wart-band and slightly in front of the normal side seam thereof. Each of the laces 12 and 1.3 is made up of two tapes 14 and 1'5 whose ends are stitched at a p1urali'ty of spaced points to the waist-band as at 16 so as to leave a regular series ot loops 17, as shown in Figure 7.

The loops 17 are so formed and spaced that the remaining free ends of the tapes be interlaced through these loops 17 so that the waist-band 8 may be adjusted to any desired size, as best shown in Figure 8. It will be evident that the tapes 1i and 15 may beso stitched to the waist-band that the distance between them may varyany desired amount, and that in adjusting the band either or both of the laces may be interlaced to :any desired amount, to secure the desired adjustment. By the attachment of the buttonless interlacing crotch structure to the waist-band and by the provision of the adjusting means attached to the waist-band, 1 have provided such a combination that manipulation of this adjustable means will not only insure a perfect fitting waist-band but will also insure that the attached gores 5 and 9 will be held in place without strain and remain normally closed.

In the garment construction shown, I have permanently connected the front of the waist-band 8 to the front of the main body portion 18, as shown in Figure 6. The back of the waist-band and the back of the body portion 18 are designed to be unattached or relatively free, the back being preferably provided with a shirt-like extension '19 extending downwardly inside and below the tree rear half of the waist-band and seat of the garment.

By proper adjustment of the laces l2 and 1.3 at the sides of the waist-band, the trousers will he held in a comfortable position and the gores will be securely but freely held in an overlapped and interlocked position. Thus, any movement of the body portion 18 will result in a movement of the extension 19 without any strain on or substantial move ment of the waist-band 8 or its attached lapped or interlocked crotch gore structure 5 and 9.

It will be obvious that I have provided a garment that will always be comfortable and positively protective, irrespective of any position of the wearer. It will also be apparent that these features may be embodied in a garment consisting of trousers only as partly shown in Figure 8, or in one or twopiece union suits or one-piece sleeping garments. However, pajamas "will be prefer- :ably so designed that the skirt extension 1 9 Will extend all the way around the garment and the waist-band will be underneath this extension and attached to the front body portion as previously described. Furthermore, the provision of the adj usti-n-g means on :the belt oit the garment permits the tightening of the waist-baud so that the trousers will hang from the waist-band instead of from the shoulders if desired by the wearer, thereby taking the strain .or weight from the upper portion of the garinent.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:

1. A union undergarment having a permanentl-y closed crotch and comprising a blouse portion, a :pants portion, separated from the blouse portion across the back at the waist, a band at the waist extending across the back where it is separated from the iblouse :portion and'connected to the pants portion, the band being-secured substantially at the sides, said pants portion being substantially centrally divided rat the seat from the crotch to said band to form ;an opening, an extension secured to one :side of said opening, to the band .at the waist and at its lower end to the front of the garment adjacent the crotch, a second overlapping extension similarly secured to the other edge of the opening, to the band at the waist and at its lower end to the front of the garment adjacent the crotch, and means at the waist line for circumferentially adjusting the band across the back to the waist.

2. A union undergarment having a permanently closed crotch and comprising a blouse portion, a pants portion, separated from the blouse portion across the back at the waist, a band at the Waist extending at least partially across the front and also extending across the back where it is separated from the blouse portion and connected to the pants portion, the band being secured substantially at the sides, said pants portion being substantially centrally divided, at the seat from the crotch to said band to form an opening, an extension having a curved outer edge secured to one side of said opening, to the band at the waist and at its lower end to the front of the garment adjacent the crotch, a second overlapping extension similarly secured to the other edge of the opening, to the band at the waist and at its lower end to the front of the garment adjacent the crotch, and means positioned in the front of the garment at the waist line for circumferentially adjusting the band across the back to the waist.

3. A union undergarment having a permanently closed crotch and comprising a blouse portion, a pants portion, separated from the blouse portion across the back at the waist, a band at the waist extending across the back Where it is separated from the blouse portion and connected to the pants portion, the band being secured substantially at the sides, said pants portion being substantiallyeentrally divided at the seat from the crotch to said band to form an opening, an extension secured to one side of said opening, to the band at the waist and at its lower end to the front of the garment adjacent the crotch, said extension serving to'close the opening, and means at the waist line for circumferentially adjusting the band across the back to the waist.
