Description

No. 863,899i Y PATENTED AUG. 20, 1907. W.BOLLWAHN. GRIPPING TOOL.
APPLIOATION FILED MAY 1l, 1907.
wm I y UNITED STATES WILLIAM BOLLWAHN, OF SHARON, WISCONSIN.
GRIPPING-Toor..
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1907.
Application filed May 11,1907. Serial No. 373,073.
To all 'whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BOLLWAHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sharon, in the county of Walworth and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gripping- Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in grippingtools, and morel particularly to one especially designed for use in applying and removing nut and bolt locks such as set forth in an application for patent filed by me on May II, I907, and bearing Serial Number 373,074. The object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong, durable and inexpensive tool of this character which will be very effective for the purpose intended and which may be used for a variety of other purposes.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of novelty hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,r in which Figure I is a side elevation, illustrating the use of the tool; Fig. 2 is a perspective of the tool; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the hook member.
My improved gripping tool consists of a lever I and a hook member 2 in one end of which the lever is pivoted. The hook member 2 is formed by bending a single piece of metal upon itself at its center to form a U-shaped end 3 having parallel arms 4 connected at one end and from the opposite ends of which project diverging hook shaped arms 5 which terminate in Widely separated jaws 6. The latter are serrated or formed with transverse biting teeth 7 so that they may be effectively engaged with an object. The lever I is curved longitudinally and is pivoted intermediate its ends between the parallel arms or portions 4 of the inner end of the hook member by a transverse pivot 8 preferably in the form of a bolt which may be removed so that the two parts of the device may be disconnected. The long arm of the lever forms a handle and the end of its short arm 9 forms a jaw which has a toothed or serrated portion I0 similar to the jaws G of the hook.
While the tool may be used for various purposes it is especially designed for use as shown in Fig. I. In said figure its jaws 6 are shown engaged with one plate of a nut and bolt lool: and its jaw 9 engaged with the head of the bolt so that the latter may be forced inwardly against the tension of the spring washer arranged upon it, to enable a ratchet nut upon the opposite end of the bolt to be tightly secured.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is rIhe herein described gripping` tool for the removal of nut-locks comprising a longitudinally curved lever having a handle at one end, a serrated gripping jaw at its other end and a transverse aperture adjacent to said gripping jaw, a hook member formed from a metal rod by bending the same upon itself` at its center to provide a closed inner end and the straight parallel sideportions provided with transverse alined apertures, said hook member also having projecting from the free ends of the side portions the diver-ging U-shaped arms which terminate in the Widely spaced gripping jaws having,- serrated gripping faces, and the removable pivot bolt passed through the transverse apertures in said lever and the side portions of the hook member, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aHX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM BOLLWAHN.
Witnesses CARL WALTER, Hmm. A. Scrnnen.
