mu. 0. c,
BERT DE VBIES, OF ASHTON, IOWA,
DEVICE FOR TAKING TWISTS OUT OF TIMBERS.
Application filed January 19, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BERT DE virus, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashton, in the county of Osceola and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Taking Twists Out of Timbers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new. and useful improvements in devices for straightening twisted timbers, etc, of different sizes, and consists of a simple and ellicient device of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the application of the invention. Fig. :2 is a similar view in another position, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the invention.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the device which has an elongated opening B therein adapted to receive a lever or pry bar D, the latter preferably conforming to the shape of the opening and adapted to bear against one end thereof. The shank portion of the device terminates in a hook E and a lug or spur F projects from said hook and is adapted to bite into the timber H to be straightened in the manner shown.
As seen in Fig. 2 the lever or pry bar I) has a notch overwhich is engaged a rope whereby the parts may be pulled from the full line position in said Fig. 2 into the dotted line position shown therein. By employing pry bars of difierent widths accord- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing to the dimensions of the timber to be operated upon, the said widths being such as to be relatively proportioned as to the length of the opening 13, the device is readily applicable to timber of different dimensions.
By the provision of a device embodying the features of my invention, it will be noted that a simple and ellicient means is afforded whereby beams or sticks of difierent sizes may be twisted when distorted by engaging the hook over the end of the beam or other object to be straightened and forcibly twisting the beam while one end of the lever is fulcrumed against the latter.
The elongated slotor opening B provides for use of the device on beams or sticks of dili'erent dimensions with the use of the same pry bar, the notch in the latter affording means for holding the rope efiectually regardless of the angle at which the pry bar may be held with relation to the member A.
What I claim to be new is 1- The herein described device for straightening timber, the same consisting of a substantially rigid unyielding member embodying in a single integral element an elongated shank with an elongated opening extending in the direction of the length of said shank and a hook at one end of said shank extended at a right angle to said shank to engage the face of a timber to be straightened with said shank bearing flat against an adjacent face of said timber, and a pry bar removably engagable in said opening in the shank to bear against a face of the timber at right angles to the bearing of the shank, whereby the device is adapted for use with timbers of varying dimensions, said pry bar having a notch to receive a rope whereby pressure may be applied in a plane parallel with said timber and with said shank.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
BERT DE VRIES. Witnesses R. M. YAPPEN, F. K. COSTERMANN.
