"Mil Ill!!!"-(WHH W T UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD EXELBY WILLIAMS, OF MODESTO, CALIFORNIA.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,167, dated October 13,1885.
Application filed July 27, 1885.
T 0 all whom/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD E. WILLIAMS, of Modesto, Stanislaus county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Pipe-Wrenches; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to that class of pipewrenches in which a curved corrugated jaw is pivoted to a stock or handle and works in connection with a fixed corrugated jaw on the end of the stock or handle, as I shall hereinafter describe.
My invention consists in the novel arrangement of the two jaws and in an improvement by which they are guided and held in a true position when in operation.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective pipe-wrench.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my pipewrench. Fig. 2 is a view showing its application.
-A is the handle or stock forming the lever of the wrench. Its forward end is thickened and formed in a jaw, B, provided with transverse corrugations or serrations on its inner face. The forward end of the jaw is provided with a lug, C.
D is a curved jaw or hook, provided with corrugations or serrations (2. Its rear end is slotted and pivoted on the handle or stock A Serial No. 172,796. (No model.)
just back of the jaw B, while its forward end is slotted or grooved at d, and adapted to fit over the lug C on the fixed jaw.
In operating the wrench the curved jaw or hook grasps the pipe from below, while the fixed jaw comes down upon it from above, its lug C fitting into the slotted front of the jaw D. The engagement of the lug and slot guides and holds the fixed jaw in a true position and prevents the handle from twisting the rear portion of the hook D where it is pivoted.
Both jaws are of the same thickness, and lie flush with each other, so that the wrench. will have a good grip on a short pipe.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i A pipe-wrench consisting of the handle or stock A, the fixed jawB on its foward end, andthe lug C on the forward end of the jaw, the curved hook or jaw D, slotted and pivoted on the handle at its rear end and having its forward end slotted or grooved, adapting it to fit and engage the lug C, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
RICHARD EXELBY WILLIAMS.
