Description

UNITED STATES I ATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. WESTERFIELD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGN OR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO FREDERICK F. ELMENDORF, OF SAME PLACE.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,707, dated June 8, 1880. Application filed April 21, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom "it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM (J. WESTER- FIELD, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in aPipe-Wrench; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to construct and make use of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters .of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is the construc- 1 tion of an improved wrench adapted to grasp cylindrical bodies; and it consists in certain novel features, the exact arrangement and operation of which will be hereinafter more fully described in detail.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved wrench, and Fig. 2 a view of the same when adjusted to grasp an object.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a handle or lever, which may be of any de- 2 5 sired length, according to the amount of leverage required. To this handle is attached the shank B, which is provided on the inner edge with one or more notches, a, adapting these parts to receive and hold the loose end of the oblong link 0. By shifting this link from one notch to another in the shank B'the wrench is adjusted to grasp pipe or other objects of different sizes. The opposite end of the link 0 is attached to the outer end of the 5 jaw 3 in the manner shown in the drawings.
- The loose end of the link 0 is retained in place in the notches a by means of the flat spring D, which is pivoted to the inner edge of the shank B at d, and extends lengthwise of the shank, the outer end being loose, adapting 0 the spring. to be moved sidewise when the loose end of the link 0 is placed in any of the notches a. The inner end of the short jaw 4 is pivoted to the outer end of the shank B, and the two connecting ends of the jaws 3 5 and 4, being pivoted together, form the fulcrum 5.
The inner or grasping edges of the jaws may be roughened; but this feature, owing to the peculiar shape and construction of the parts, is not considered necessary, as the greater the power applied to the end of the handle the tighter the object is grasped, thereby preventing all danger of slipping around when applied to a cylindrical body.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a wrench, the combination, with the shank B, provided with the notches a. and the spring D, of the oblong link 0, the longjaw 3, and the short jaw 4, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a wrench of the character hereinbefore described, the combination of the following elements, consisting of the handle A, the shank B, provided with the series of notches a, the spring D, the short jaw at, the long jaw 3, and the oblong link G, when constructed and arranged as set forth.
WILLIAM G. WESTERFIELD.
