CHRISTIAN HANSENiv CARL HANSEN; BRICK HANDLING IMPLEMENT No. 468,872. Patented Feb. 16., 1892.
AT E sT: INVENTORS;
6% rab l an flZzn-se-ra' C'ccrZ .7/24726677 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN HANSEN AND CARL HANSEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BRICK-HANDLING IMPLEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,872, dated February 16, 1892.
Application filed August 10, 1891. Serial No. 402,276, (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHRISTIAN HANSEN- and CARL HANSEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have jointly inclamp for such uses in which are combined the features of a strong and efiective means for grasping a number of brick together, so that the same can be handled conveniently, a simple and effective construction by which the clamp is adapted for insertion into a close pile of brick to engage the desired number of the same, and a convenient and ready means for adjusting the appliance to engage and hold a greater or less number of brick. WVe attain such object by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brickhandling appliance constructed in accordance with our present invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 a detail sectional plan of the adjustable end of the appliance, illustrating the means for efiectin g an adjustment of the parts.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the dilferent views.
As represented in the drawings, the present handler consists of a fixed claw 1 and a pivoted claw 2, of a flattened pointed form, as shown, united together by a connected bodybar 3 at right angles to the claws and which is preferably made of a longitudinally-adj ustable construction by being formed in two parts 4 and 5, adjustable one on the other, the one part carrying the fixed claw 1 and the other the pivoted claw 2, the parts being held to the required adj ustment by any well-known and suitable locking mechanism, preferably by forming the shank 6 of the handle 7 of an oblong square form adapted to turn length wise in one of a series of the connected circular notches 8 in the one member, the said shank being connected to the other in a manner to allow of only a pivotal or turning movement, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. The pivoted claw 2 has a bent shank 9, to which is attached a longitudinal lever-handle 10,-
that extends parallel with the body-bar 3, as shown.
Our inventionis intended for use in loading and unloading brick from wagons and cars, theflattened pointed claws 1 and 2 bein g adapted to readily enter between the brick in their stacked condition on the wagon or other place, the lever construction of the pivoted claw 2 afiording automatic clamping action to hold the brick while the implement is held suspended by its handles.
We are aware that prior to our invention brick-handlers have been provided with a stationary and a pivoted jaw and individual intermediate sliding jaws for engaging individually a number of molded or unburned brick in brick-yards; but such brick-handlers were intended solely for handling such brick arranged in their proper separated condition best adapted for drying and were not intended or adapted to handle closely-piled burned brick in the loading and unloading of the same during transportation. o therefore make no claim to any such construction, broadly; but,
Having thus 7 fully described our said invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An implement for handling brick during transportation or shipment, comprising abody portion 3, provided at one end with a handle 7, and a flattened pointed claw 1, arranged at right angles to the body, the claw 2, pivoted to the opposite end ofthe body portion 3 and having a flattened pointed formation, and the handle 10, attached to the claw 2 and extending parallel with the body portion 3, essentially as set forth.
2. An implement for handling brick during transportation or shipment, comprising a body portion 3, made in two sections arranged to slide upon each other, a locking device there- In testimony whereof we affix our signatures for consisting of the oblong" handle-shank 6 in presence of two witnesses. and serles of connected clrcular notches 8, a CHRISTIAN HANSEN.
flattened pointed claw 1 on the one section,
5 and a flattened pointed claw 2, pivoted to the other section and provided with a longitudi- Witnesses: nally-extending handle 10, essentially as set ROBERT BURNs, 'forth. GEO. H. ARTHUR.
