UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN GREIN, OF MAINE PRAIRIE, MINNESOTA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,353, dated May 10, 1881,
Application filed March 16, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN GREIN, of Maine Prairie, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented an Improved Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is a wrench for use in oiling carriages and for other purposes, which shall be so constructed as to hold the nut when removed, and in such manner that the same can be replaced without soiling the hands.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved nut-Wrench. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the retaining link or button.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The long arunA and short arm B are pivoted together at a. The forward end of the long arm A has a lateral bend, at, in it, and the end thereof is formed into the nut-clamps A, for clasping one side of the nut D, while the other side of the nut is clasped by the clamp 0, formed on the end of the arm 0, which is pivoted at c to the long arm A.
The pivoted arm 0 is operated to clasp and release the nut by the forward end of the arm B, which is formed into a ring, I), which surrounds the swinging arm G.
The opposite or rear end of the arm Bis also formed into a ring, a, which secures the latch or button E, which is adapted to be carried over the rear end of the long arm A, and to engage with the notches a for holding the arms when they are brought together for rlasping and holding the nut, as shown in the drawings.
By this means the nut can be conveniently removed from the carriage and replaced without the necessity and annoyance of handling the nut with the hands, as heretofore.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- 1. In wrenches, the cross-pivoted levers A B, the former provided with a right-angled end carryin g-clamp, A, and the latter provided with end ring, D, in combination with the arm 0, pivoted at right angles to lever A, and carrying a clamp, G, as shown and described.
2. Thebent arm A,t'ormed with the nut-clamp A at one end, and with thenotches a. at the other, and having the arm (J, which is formed with the nut-clamp U pivoted to it, in combination with the pivoted arm B, having the ring 1) at one end and the latch or button E at the other, as and for the purposes described.
JOEN GBEIN.
