UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD L. MORRIS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,239, dated January 4, 1881.
Application filed May 21, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. MORRIS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State o t' Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps, of which the following` is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved clamp, and particularly applies to the nut in which the screw is caused to operate, said nut being so constructed as to admit of releasing the screw-thread at will, for the purpose of adapting the clamp quickly to different widths of work.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my invention is illustrated, Figure l being a side view 5 Figs. 2 and 3, vertical longitudinal sections, in part, ot' the invention, showing the action of the half-nut; and Fig. 4, a cross-section on line .fr x, Fig. 2.
A represents a clamp in convenient form for griping work. B is the screw used for the purpose ot' griping any article which may be placed between the bearing-surfaces O and D. E is the chamber, in which the screw Bis caused to operate in connection with the `half-nut G, hereinafter described. The chamber E is constructed with one side in circular form, to tit the surface of the screw B and give it the proper direction when in operation'. The opposite side of the chamber E is constructed to hold and tit a wedge-shaped sliding half-nut, G, whose thread side is parallel with the screw B. A stop-pin, H, passes through the halt'- nut G, and alsothrough slots J, provided in the sides of the chamber E.
Now, when work is placed between the bearing-surfaces O and D, and the operator desires to obtain a gripe upon the same, the screw B, engaging with the thread of the half-nut G,
(No model.)
draws it up the inclined plane, upon which it rests, within the chamber E, until brought to a rest by the stop-pin H, workin g in the slots J, or until the screw B strikes against the opposite side of the chamber E, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The screw B is thus held rmly in the required position for griping, and maybe turned down upon the work as far as desired.
When the work is released, by turning back the screw, and the operator desires to change the screw quickly for holding work of a different width, the screw-thread is disengaged by simply pressing upon the screw, so as to drive the wedge-shaped haltn ut G down its inclined plane in thechamber E, which leaves the screw B free to be slid up or down at will, as shown in Fig. 3.
Instead of the stop-pin H and slots J, the half-nut G and chamber E may be titted with tongue and groove, or other suitable device, for guiding and stopping the half-nut within the chamber.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a clamp having bearing-surfaces O D, between which articles are to be griped, the sliding wedge-shaped half-nut G, constructed to operate in connection with the screw B and the chamber E, the said chamber having one side parallel with the screw and the other side at an angle with the screw to tit the half-nut, for the purpose of 4engaging or disengaging the screw at will, substantially as described.
