Description
W. KING.
Patented Sept, 16, 1919.
vwamto'a OWLUHM KING GRAPH c0, WASHINGTON. m C.
WILLIAM KING, OF
LONGIVION'I, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO' AYRE$ STRADLEY, 0F LONGMONT, COLORADO.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 16, 1919.
Application filed. April 30, 1919. Serial No. 293,833.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Longmont, in the county of Boulder and State of Colorado, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches and more particularly to what will be termed an automobile wrench, the main object of the present invention being the provision of a wrench of the above type which is provided with a plurality of removable heads adapted to fit various parts of the machine and are so mounted that they may be readily changed when desired.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a wrench whereby the removable head members may be readily disposed at various desired angles and securely held in a position to gain access to the unhandy places on the machine.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time, is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application.
Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view, parts being broken away and illustrated in section.
Fig. 3 is an edge view, parts thereof being broken away and shown in section; and
Fig. 1 is a detail side elevation illustrating a slightly modified form of wrench head.
In carrying out my invention, a shank 1 is provided which is preferably formed of a heavy flat metal and bifurcated at one end. as shown at 2, to form the spaced arms 8. The arms 3 are provided with the elongated slots 4, said slots being arranged in alinement and slidably mounted therein, is a transversely arranged retaining bolt 5. One
end of the bolt 5 is threaded and mounted thereon is a removable nut 6 and formed on the other end of the bolt is an elongated head 7, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fullyset forth.
My improved wrench is provided with a plurality of removable head members which are generally indicated by the numeral 8 and include a body member 9 which is bifurcated at one end to form the engaging jaws 10. The other end of the body of each head member is arcuately curved, as shown at 11 and is provided with the notches 12, and further provided with a transverse opening 18. The various head members are secured between the arms 3 of the wrench by having the pin 14: inserted through the openings 15 formed in the outer ends of the arms and the opening 13 formed in the body of the head member.
It will be noted from the accompanying drawing that the head members 8 are securely held in various angular positions by having the retaining bolt 5 engaging in one of the notches 12. The bolt 5 is yieldably ield in position by means of the coil spring 16 which is arranged between the arms 3 and disposed between the bolt and the inner end of the bifurcation. It will also be noted that when the bolt 5 is in its eifective position, the elongated head 7 thereon will engage over the head of the pin 14 to retain said pin in position.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be readily apparent that when it is desired to place one of the head members in position, the bolt 5 is pressed toward the innor ends of the slots, the member arranged between the arms 3 and the pin 14 being inserted in position. The bolt 5 is then released, the tension of the spring 16 forcing the bolt toward the outer ends of the slots so that the same will engage within one of the notches 12 and the head 7 will engage over the head of the pin 14 to retain the same in place. From this, it will be apparent that the head members 8 may be readily interchanged when so desired. It will be noted that in addition to the removable head members, I have formed in the inner end of the handle portion of the wrench, a small notch which is particularly adapted for use upon small nuts.
It will be readily understood that while I have only shown one size wrench head in the accompanying drawing, various sizes and forms may be used. In addition to the regular form of Wrench heads, I provide What is known as an alligator head which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in Fig. 4:- My improved Wrench as herein shown and described, is extremely simple in construction and, at the same time, can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively small cost.
While I have shown and describedthepreferred form of my invention, it is obvious that various changes in the details of construction may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, Without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the, appended claim.
Having thus described this invention, What I claim is:
A Wrench of the class described including Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner a shank, spaced arms at one end thereof, said arms having opposite slots therein, a removable arcuate body having opposing jaws and adapted to be arranged between said arms, a headed pivot pin adapted to be inserted through said arms and body to pivotally mount said body, said arcuate body having notches formed therein, a spring actuated bolt mounted in said slots and adapted to engage said notches to cooperatively retain the arcuate body in various angular positions, and an elongated head formed on said bolt adapted to engage over the head of the pivot pin to retain the pine against removal.
In testimony whereof I hereunto allix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM KING. Witnesses WV. H. EASTER, S. D. JAYNEs.
