DOOR CHECK AND CLOSER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MALLoRY, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Blenheim, in the county of Kent, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Checks and Closers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in door checksand has for its object to make a simple, cheap and compact device for holding screcn doors, cabinet doors etc., closed and which may be readily attached to the ordinary doors now in use without the requirement of any special tools or skilled labor.
To this end the invention consists in the peculiar construction, alrangement and combination of parts all as more fully hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure 1, is a side elevation of my device as applied to a door casing showing the door in the act of being closed; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the door closed; Fig. 3, a plan view of Fig. 2.
A indicates the base plate secured to the inside of a door casing B by screws 0 and having its opposite ends bent at right angles to the base plate but on opposite sides to form shoulders D for engaging the door jamb at one end and an apertured projection E at the opposite end. The ends of the shoulders D being bent back to form spurs F adapted to be driven into the door jamb.
G indicates a lip formed by doubling the metal upon itself between the shoulders D.
H indicate guides formed by bending inward the opposite edges of the base plate and I indicate stops at the inner end of said guides formed by bending the metal downward. J indicates a slide formed by doubling the sheet metal blank upon itself and then bending it laterally to form flanges K adapted to travel in said guides H. L indicates a dog pivoted in said slide between the doubled over portion of the metal and carrying fingers M, N one projecting through an aperture 0 formed in the bend of the slide and both cooperating with an apertured plate P adjustably secured to the inside of the door Q by a screw R.
S indicates a coiled spring connecting the slide J and projection E to normally hold the same retracted and T indicates a shoulder on the rear edge of the dog L cooperating with the lip G on the base plate to hold the slide projected while the door is open.
It will thus be seen that when the door is closed the Specification of Letters Patent.

edge of the plate P will strike the finger M and trip the dog when the finger N will engage the aperture U in the plate P and the spring S exert a force to move the slide and close the door. In opening the door the edge of the opening U in the plate P will engage the finger N and put the spring S under extra tension until the shoulder T shall have cleared the lip G when the dog will be tripped by a further opening movement of the door and the spring held under tension, the door being free to open farther. 1
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination of a supporting base, a movable member guided on said base, means connecting said member and base to permit the movement. of said member, a pivoted dog carried by the movable member and means on the door adapted to trip the dog and cooperate therewith to close the door.
2. In a door check and closer, the combination with a base, of a movable member on said base, a spring connecting said member and base, a pivoted dog carried by the movable member to lock the same in one position against the action of the spring and a plate carried by the door and adapted to trip the dog to close the door.
3. In :1 door check and closer, the combination of a base plate formed with guides, a slide mounted in said guides, a dog pivoted in said slide and adapted to engage the base plate, a spring connecting the slide and base plate and a plate on the door adapted to trip the dog.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base-plate formed with guides, a slide formed by doubling the sheet metal blank upon itself arranged to travel in said guides, a spring connecting the slide and base-plate, a dog provided with fingers pivoted in the slide and constructed to engage the base plate, to hold the spring under tension, an apertured plate carried by the door and cooperating with said finger to trip the dog.
5. In a device of the character described, the combina tion of a base-plate formed with guides and a lip, an apertured slide formed by doubling the sheet metal blank upon itself and with lateral flanges arranged to travel in said guides, a dog pivoted on the slide and formed with fingers one of said fingers projecting through said aperture and having a shoulder cooperating with said lip on the base plate, a coiled spring connecting the adjacent ends of the base plate and slide and an apertured plate on the door coliperating with said fingers to trip the dog.
6. In a device of the character described, the combina tion of a base plate formed with guides, an car at one end and shoulders forming spurs at the opposite end and a lip intermediate said shoulders, a slide traveling in said guides, a dog having fingers pivoted on the slide and a shoulder coiiperating with said lip, a spring connecting said slide and ear, and an apertured plate on the door cooperating with said fingers to trip the dog.
7. In a door check and closer, the combination of a baseplate adapted to be secured to the door casing and formed with guides on opposite sides, an apertured car at one end of said base plate and shoulders terminating in spurs adapted to be driven into the door jamb at the opposite end, a lip intermediate said shoulders, an apertured slide formed by doubling the sheet metal blank upon itself and with lateral flanges traveling, in said guides, a doe; pivoted in said doubled over portion of the slide and formed with fingers one of which projects through said aperture, a shoulder on the dog cooperatingwith said lip, a coiled spring connecting said slide and ear to retract the slide, stops to limit the return movement of the slide and 10 an apertured plate carried by the door codperating with said fingers to trip the dog.
