Description
A. W. UPTON. ATTACHMENT FOR DOOR LATOHES.
APPLICATION rum) Jun: 15, 1019.
Patented Mar. 21, 1911.
UNITED STATES PATENT orrion.
ALBERT W. UP'ION, OF LOS .ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR DOOR-LATCHES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT IV. Ur'ron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Door-Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a certain new and useful attachment to doors in connection with ordinary spring latches and has for its object to not only render it unnecessary under ordinary conditions to release manually the latch from its keeper but at the same time to prevent the jar and noise incident to the closing of a door.
With these ends in view my invention consists of the attachment hereinafter more fully described adapted to be adjustably attached to a door.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may know how to make and apply my improved at tachment and to appreciate its advantages, I will proceed to describe the samereferring by numerals to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of a door and frame with my improved attachment to the spring latch. Fig. 2, is a horizontal or cross section showing the spring latch of the door interlocked with its keeper in the frame. Fig. 3, is a similar view showing the spring latch held against entry into its keeper in the door frame by my improved attachment and Fig. 4, is a detail perspective view of a door and showing my improved attachment as adjustably connected with the door and in the position shown in Fig. 3.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
1, represents an ordinary door, and 2, the frame to which it is hinged, 3, is the usual latch, operated by a spring 4, and knob or handle 5, and 6, is a keeper or socket within the door frame with which the spring latch interlocks, all of the usual construction and arrangement.
My improved attachment consists of a plate 7, formed with the transverse slots 8, near each end, and thus adapted to be ad Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 567,041.
justably secured to the door 1, by suitable screws 9, and to this plate 7, is reciprocat ingly connected and at a right angle thereto, a metallic spring tongue 10, provided with an operating clip or projection 11. The free portion of this tongue as clearly shown at Figs. 2, 3, and 4, is curved or bent outwardly from the vertical edge of the door, in order that it may gradually and frictionally contact with the door frame and keeper of the spring latch in an obvious manner, in order that when the door is closed this frictional contact of the spring tongue with the door frame and latch keeper will prevent any ar or noise.
By reason of the slots 8-, in the plate 7, it will be readily understood, that the attachment as a whole can be readily adjusted with reference to any variable distances between the meeting edge or face of the door and the frame, while at the same time preventing the jar and noise hereinbefore referred to.
It will be readily seen that the frictional contact of the spring tongue 10, with the frame and latch keeper will hold the door in closed condition under ordinary conditions and render it unnecessary to manipulate the spring latch to open the door. The spring tongue is formed with a return or flange 12, adapted to embrace frictionally the plate 7, or it may be connected therewith in any other suitable manner to permit of its reciprocating movement thereon.
Having described the construction and arrangement of my improved attachment what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An attachment for doors comprising a plate adapted to be secured to a door, and a spring tongue secured to said plate and vertically adjustable thereon to intersect the path of a latch on said door, said spring tongue being adapted to yieldingly retard the closing of said door.
2. In combination with a door and a spring latch secured thereto, an attachment for said door comprising a plate secured thereto, and a tongue secured to said plate and adjustable thereon to intercept the path of said latch.
3. In combination with a door and a spring latch secured thereto, an attachment for said door comprising a plate secured vertically thereon and horizontally adjust-able plate and vertically adjustable thereon to intercept the path of said springlatcln Y and adjustable horizontally thereon, and a tically adjustable thereon to intercept the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Coin thereon, and a spring tongue secured to said path of said latch, said spring tongue being adapted to frictionally engage the door frame upon the closing of said door.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 1 two subscribing Witnesses. I ALBERT W. UPTON.
' flVitnesses I M. E. BADGER, N. O. DAWSON.
a. In combination with" a door 'and its frame, spring latch secured to said door, and avkeeiper secured to said frame, a plate secured'to' saiddoor adjacent said latch spring tongue secured to said plate and vermissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
